Nemetona is a Celtic goddess who is primarily associated with open air places of worship. Hailing from Northeastern Gaul, she is believed to have been one of the primary deities, and the namesake of the Germano-Celtic peoples known as the Nemetes. Traces of her worship were found in their former territory along the Middle Rhine, as well as in the Albachtal sanctuary in present-day Trier, Germany. Further evidence of Nemetona's veneration has also been discovered in Bath, England, in the form of an altar dedicated to her. Unlike the Romans, the Celts did not build temples, but practiced their spirituality outdoors in nature. They worshiped their gods in sacred groves amongst the trees of the natural landscape. Nemetona's name alludes to this very concept, and makes her a guardian goddess of this type of veneration. The Celtic root "nemeto-" refers to consecrated religious places known as "nemeton" (plural: nemeta). Several surviving inscriptions pair Nemetona with Mars, the Roman god of war. This has led many researchers to place him as her divine consort. Depending on the location, Mars was known under different names. In the Rhine-Moselle region, he was worshiped alongside Nemetona as "Loucetios", which scholars interpret to mean lightning. Some contemporary pagans associate hawthorn trees with Nemetona. In Celtic folklore, hawthorn is said to heal the broken heart. As a plant, it was commonly used for rune inscriptions. In Gaelic myth, it marks the entrance to the Otherworld, and has a strong connection with faeries. An old British belief concerning hawthorn is especially interesting in regards to Nemetona. It is said that hawthorns originate from lightning or thunderbolts. This folk belief ties in beautifully with Nemetona's possible partner Loucetios, the god of lightning.

Lughnasadh Day (August 1st)- The feast of the god Lugh which was introduced by Lugh to commemorate his foster mother Tailtu. It is one of the four major Celtic festivals and is an agrarian feast in honour of the harvesting of crops. Early records claim the festival was celebrated for 15 days. Christianity took his feast over as Lammas, the feast of the first fruits. The name survives in modern Irish (Lunasa), and Manx (Luanistyn) for the name of the month of August.

Baduhenna is a Germanic war goddess worshipped by the Frisians as attested in Tacitus recordings. She may be etymologically linked to the Celtic goddess Badb, and scholars also link her to the cult of the Matres and Matronae. Even though little is known about her ancient worship, a record of an impressive sacrifice to her has survived. In the battle of the Baduhenna Woods, that took place in 28 AD in the region we know today as the Netherlands, 900 Roman soldiers were slain by the Frisians, possibly in Baduhenna's name. As is common for a Germanic goddess, she received her offerings in her holy grove, the woods by the same name that were and still are a swamp forest. Baduhenna is a Teutonic goddess of warfare and storms. On votive stones, she is also referred to under the bynames "Hariasa" and "Harimella". The name Hariasa could point to a possible etymological link to the Norse valkyrie Herja, since both of these words derive from the Proto-Germanic word "Herjaza". Contemporary pagan practitioners compare Baduhenna's war-like energy to that of a valkyrie from Norse mythology. They describe Baduhenna as a source of strength that you can call upon in dark times and situations that call for immediate action and protection. She is full of enormous life force, and her incredible strength is similar to the berserker's anger as described in the sagas. Berserkers can be understood as a type of "spiritual warrior" and are closely linked to shamanism. Among the Germanic tribes, they were groups of warriors, who fought in a trance-like state of ecstatic battle-fury, closely linked to their respective totem animal, usually a bear or a wolf. Next to the berserkers ("berserkir" meaning 'bear-shirt), the ulfhednar or wolf-warriors ("úlfhednar" meaning 'wolf-hide) are probably the most well-known war band of that kind. The names refer both to the practice of going into battle wearing a ritual dress made out of the totem animal's hide, as well as to shape-shifting into the animal itself.

If we forget our relationships with our ancestors, then we will drift aimlessly into a future defined by oblivion. A tree has roots in the ground. We have connection in the blood of our forefathers. They are the reason we exist, in spite of any shortcomings they had.

At the heart of New-Age ideology is one value above all others – the unadulterated elevation of oneself, normally in the name of the pursuit of base desires and sensory pleasures. Think of a conman, for instance, who tries to manipulate a court in a case of insurance fraud scheme, or perhaps a plagiarist selling "get rich quick" books. In this case, we must ask ourselves, what is "having a patron deity", really? One of my contacts remarks, "To claim a patron deity you are essentially saying you are especially loved or at least valuable to a certain God. And to make the claim it better be true,"; another one says, "In my understanding, a patron deity is a god or goddess from whom a person has sought protection through prayer and appropriate offerings or sacrifices. If signs and personal experience indicate that the request has been accepted, that deity is regarded as the person's patron. It is the deity to whom a person primarily turns for protection and to whom they show special reverence through worship and offerings,"; and another contends, "The thing is real, though rare and special. The common refrain today, and the real hybris of those humans who think these relationships are theirs to decide, is that certain types ALL think they're so rare and special - conceitedly taking for granted the gods' judgment on the matter." Essentially, divine patronage to a person, place, or thing, refers to acting out of protection, like a guardianship. What the crux of the issue is at hand is there are narcissistic hildings and self-seekers out there, and, in the spirit of New-Ageism, will jump the gun to proclaim a "patron deity" as if trading a Pokémon card, normally to boost their sense of selfhood, and, what normally follows is a trail of this individual, insultingly toward the divine, having delusions of grandeur. An essential question, however, poses a direct challenge to their superstition: that being, by what evidence do they have to have been especially favored for protecting more than others? It seems these types are misguided at best, and, at worst, guilty of blasphemy and impiety. It all remains an easy pit to find oneself plunging into.
