  • [Comment] Educating caregivers of people ageing with HIV https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanhiv/article/PIIS2352-3018(26)00141-4/fulltext?rss=yes The Lancet HIV Commission on Ageing and HIV: a global perspective represents a milestone in HIV care. By including the voices of researchers, clinicians, and people with lived experience, the Commission has created a template for reconfiguring the care of people ageing with HIV.1 A key message is the importance of care integration and creation of partnerships with all key stakeholders, including informal caregivers, who are “relatives, friends, partners, or neighbors who provide assistance, typically unpaid, to someone who has limitations in their physical, mental, or cognitive functioning.”2

  • [The Lancet HIV Commissions] The Lancet HIV Commission on ageing and HIV: a global perspective https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanhiv/article/PIIS2352-3018(26)00058-5/fulltext?rss=yes Global access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for people living with HIV is a miracle of the modern era. Continued access to ART has extended the lives of millions of people living with HIV. At the same time, a growing number of people newly diagnosed with HIV are aged 50 years or older, and their treatment is often delayed. Older people at risk for HIV or living with HIV face unique challenges, such as combined stigma from age and HIV status, yet are often assumed to be at low risk for HIV. Older people with HIV are likely to have multiple comorbid conditions (multimorbidity), which adds increasing complexity to their care, and the global health community is only beginning to understand how ART-suppressed HIV influences this process.

  • [Comment] Caregivers and healthy ageing with HIV in low-income and middle-income countries https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanhiv/article/PIIS2352-3018(26)00142-6/fulltext?rss=yes The success of the HIV response has created a compelling necessity for health-care systems to support people living with HIV as they age. The Lancet HIV Commission on Ageing and HIV: a global perspective has carefully outlined the clinical, social, and system-level changes that are needed to meet this need, recognising the crucial role of local and digital communities.1 Yet one essential role, that of the personal caregiver, requires future development.

  • [Profile] Nigeria's HIV survivors become its community safety net https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanhiv/article/PIIS2352-3018(26)00174-8/fulltext?rss=yes In Taraba, north-eastern Nigeria, Layidi Johnson's life has become part of her work. For nearly two decades, she has lived publicly with HIV. She has spoken about it on radio and television. Women in her community come to her with questions about testing, pregnancy, treatment, and fear. Some arrive after a diagnosis. “I use myself as a role model”, she told The Lancet HIV. Johnson has been on antiretroviral therapy (ART) for 19 years and gave birth to four children without HIV. Today, she uses that experience to persuade other women that HIV no longer has to define the future of their families.

  • [Profile] Advocacy and empowerment for people ageing with HIV https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanhiv/article/PIIS2352-3018(26)00175-X/fulltext?rss=yes Founded in 2015 by long-term survivors of HIV, The Reunion Project, a US-based non-governmental organisation, works to support, connect, and advocate for people ageing with HIV, including those who lived through the worst years of the AIDS crisis.
