Goylani told Al Jazeera yesterday that it will take 20-25 years to rebuild Syria. No shit, Sherlock. Maybe a decade and half long civil war that has left the country at the mercy of Israel, wasn’t such a good idea. Now finally some Syrian people have begun to wake up. They realized too late, like the Libyans. It’s funny seeing him give the example of Singapore. Syria’s HDI in 2009 was .650, a medium developed country. There was zero IMF or World Bank debt. There was some bilateral debt towards a few countries. Everything in Syria from life expectancy to education to medical care, was trending upwards. Now Syria needs around half a trillion dollars just to rebuild properly. The “Blessed Revolution” wiped out nearly 3 decades of development. Was Syria perfect with Assad? Obviously not. Was Assad a dictator, yes. Did the situation merit a near 15 year long civil war that wrecked the country and drove millions out of it, killed and wounded many, and destroyed most of its infrastructure? No. Damascus and other cities remained centers for learning and Islamic scholarship was being produced. Students from around the world benefitted. Many Syrian people were becoming more religious after the initial spread of secularism in the 1960s and 1970s. (The same was happening in Libya under Gaddafi. People were becoming more religious, many scholars and huffadh were churned out. Libya was considered as a highly developed country and ranked number 1 by the UN in terms of HDI for all of Africa.) It’s even more ironic seeing scholars who wax lyrical about the fun times they had in Syria in the 1990s and 2000s, support the destruction of the country. May Allāh preserve Syria and Libya, may Allāh protect Egypt and other Muslim countries from pernicious color revolutions designed by the enemies of Islam. One may have several valid criticisms of the likes of Mufti Ali Gomaa, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Habib Ali Jifri, and co, may God preserve them. But these scholars understand a fundamental point that the blood of Muslims and their lives is not to be taken lightly. And if you actually spent any time with these scholars you’d understand their long term thinking and plans for actual development. A stable but relatively peaceful secular dictatorship that allows you to teach Islam, will always develop more than a civil war ridden nation with so called “Islamist” rulers in charge. Hence why the aforementioned scholars and others don’t blindly support shady revolutions (Syria) nor ragtag groups (Hamas) which both ultimately get manipulated by the enemies of Islam. The Ikhwani and Maududi types won’t like to hear this. Their lack of religious knowledge, failure to understand history, and poor understanding of how politics actually works, allows the enemies of Islam to use and abuse them. The only cure is to actually learn the religion, understand the Sirah of the Prophet ﷺ ,and be aware of the plots of our enemies. The next time you see someone advocating for a revolution, look into his background, follow the money and don’t encourage the wanton destruction of a nation.

Sufi Political Activism This is an excellent piece by Dr. Edward Moad on the history of Sufism, how virtually every orthodox Sunni scholar was involved with Sufi orders, and the political activism of the great Sufi saints, many of whom were scholars and warriors. From the likes of Imam Hasan al Basri and his contempt for the Umayyads, to Imam Junayd al Baghdadi and Imam Al Ghazali, to the reforms of Imam Ahmad ibn Idris and his student Muhammad ibn Ali al Senussi’s jihad in Libya, Imam Uthman dan Fodio’s Islamic state in West Africa, and Emir Abdul Qadir al Jaza’iri’s fight against French colonization in Algeria, and Sayyid Ahmad Barelvi and Shah Ismail Dehlawi’s jihad in India. Islamic scholars traditionally distrusted governments. And while rebellion against rulers has generally always been discouraged, Sufi orders played a vital role in making sure that Muslim societies didn’t need to rely on the government. Many projects from the funding of schools, hospitals, soup kitchens, guilds for workers, were done entirely without government support. This was in addition to the official Waqf system which kept things running smoothly. And many times Sufi orders like the Qadiris and Naqshbandis and Chishtis and others would be involved in advising rulers and having people in key positions of influence. Let this be a lesson to anyone who accuses orthodox Sunnis/Sufis of political quietism, and to the imbecilic Wahhabis who claim Sufis never did armed jihad. Many of the key fighters in the Crusades were Sufis. All the anti colonial efforts against the British/French and others were led by Sufis. Two pathetic shabbos goys on Fox News openly talking about which key Iranian infrastructure sites to bomb next. These are all egregious war crimes according to international law. Russia and other countries have faced worse punishments for doing far less than America has.
