It is narrated from ʿAli رضي الله عنه that he said in one of his khutbahs: “It has reached me that your women mingle with foreign men in the marketplace. Do you not have ghayrah? Indeed, there is no good in one who has no ghayrah.” Ibn al-Qayyim said: “Indeed, the foundation of religion is ghayrah, and whoever has no ghayrah has no religion. Ghayrah protects the heart, and thus the limbs are protected by it, so it repels evil and indecency. The absence of ghayrah causes the heart to die, and then the limbs die with it; at that point, there remains no ability whatsoever to repel [evil]." وقال الراغب الأصفهاني عن الغيرة: (جعل الله سبحانه هذه القوة في الإنسان... ولذلك قيل: كل أمة وضعت الغيرة في رجالها وضعت العفة في نسائها، وقد يستعمل ذلك في صيانة كل ما يلزم الإنسان صيانته). Al-Rāghib al-Aṣfahānī, concerning ghayrah , said: “Allah, Glorified is He, placed this power within man... For this reason it has been said: ‘Every nation in whose men ghayrah was placed had chastity placed in its women.’ This may also be applied to safeguarding everything that a person is required to safeguard."

Shaykh Hamad al Surayh mentions that he has studied physics, chemistry, astronomy, and astrophysics, yet he swears that he has not encountered any field more difficult than the science of illal (the study of identifying subtle defects within hadith.) He then quotes a narration from Al zuhri stating “This knowledge (hadith) can only be attained by formidable men”

A funny comparison one of the brothers dropped that I found interesting: Ilm is like a very gorgeous woman that is extremely jealous and very stingy, its also very picky and very selective, it only chooses a few selected people to give its love. So It’s something enticing that everyone wants, but like we mentioned its very picky, it only gives its attention to people that are serious, have drive, willing to do anything to get to it, willing to show “her” that they’re serious about the relationship. Ilm is also jealous, it doesn’t like it when you occupy yourself with something else, it wants your undivided attention. When other factors start popping up in your life it will give you the cold shoulder. Hence thats why the people of knowledge would say: “Knowledge will not give you a part of it until you give it all of yourself” So you have to sharpen yourself to be a man worthy of it, if it really entices you then you need to do what’s necessary to win her over. You have to be serious and devoted, you have to show it that you’re willing to do anything to reach it, whether it be walking through a desert or swimming through an ocean, you have to prove you’re “love” for it before you gain anything in return. As a poet once said: فَواظِبهُ وَخُذ بِالجِدِّ فيهِ … فَإِن أَعطاكَهُ اللَهُ أَخَذتا So preserve and take it seriously … For if Allah grants you it [knowledge] you will benefit

  • 🖋️ From the signs of husn al-dhann (good thoughts) of Allah: ▶Performing good deeds, leaving sins (minor or major), striving against the nafs, making time for the Qur’an, performing voluntary ʼibadah. As for someone who claims to have good thoughts of Allah but neither feels shy of sinning in front of his Lord, nor strives against his self, nor strives to perform good deeds, such a person only deceives himself.

  • Elevating Hadiths (Sahih li-Ghayrihi & Hasan li-Ghayrihi): Sahih li-Ghayrihi (Authentic due to external support): This is a Hasan li-dhatihi hadith (hasan in itself) that comes through multiple independent chains of similar strength. The combination of these chains elevates it to Sahih. Hasan li-Ghayrihi (Good due to external support): This is a Da'if (weak) hadith whose weakness is slight (such as a minor break in the chain or a narrator with a slight memory lapse). When multiple slightly weak chains support each other, the narration elevates to Hasan. ⚠️ Important Rule: Severe weakness (e.g., narrators accused of lying, fabrication, or severe negligence) can never be elevated, no matter how many chains exist!

  • The Conditions of a Sahih Hadith: 'Adalah and Dabt (Sharh Nukhbat ul-Fikr by Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Shābiʿ) A narrator must possess two core qualities: ‘adalah (uprightness) and dabt (accuracy/retention). What is ‘Adalah? There is much to say about ‘adalah, but to simplify: it is rectitude and upright behavior, specifically, adhering to obligatory duties and avoiding major sins. Is ‘adalah alone enough to accept a narrator's report? No. A person might come to us who prays, fasts, worships, and strives in religious devotion, yet the scholars say he is "very weak" (da‘if jiddan). Why? Because of his dabt, meaning: his memory is weak. Conversely, a brilliant person with an exceptional memory might come to us, and the scholars still say he is "very weak." Why? Because his uprightness is compromised; he neglects Salah or openly commits prohibited acts. Therefore, a narrator must be both upright (‘adl) and accurate (dabit). If he has both, scholars call him thiqah (trustworthy), hujjah (a proof), or mutqin (meticulous). Look at the extreme precision of the hadith scholars and their caution regarding the Sunnah! A person famous for prayer, fasting, and piety is not accepted in transmitting prophetic reports if his memory is weak, and scholars do not hesitate to criticise his dabt, even if he were the most ascetic of people. The Sunnah is not transmitted by someone with poor memory. Likewise, a person with a brilliant memory whose religious commitment is compromised does not transmit the Sunnah.
