When reason fails, the devil helps – Aql pand bergan joyda iblis yordamga keladi. Fyodor Dostoyevskiy o’zining “Jinoyat va Jazo” asarida ushbu jumlani qo’llagan, va bu jumla men uchun katta mohiyatga ega. First of all, let me give you the background of the story: Roskolnikov - our protagonist- has decided to do something (in order not to spoil the story, I’ll be discreet); one day, while overwhelmed by the thought of whether he should commit the thing or not, he falls asleep. In his sleep, he has a vivid dream - a nightmare, to be precise - in which a group of men torture a horse and beat it to its death. After waking up from such a horrible nightmare, he makes up his mind and decides that it’s not in his nature to commit a crime. Here, his reasoning helps him realise that he’s not capable of carrying out the thing; but as we mentioned earlier, “when reason fails, the devil comes to help.” So, on his way back home with his mind made that he won’t be doing the thing, that he CANNOT do the thing, he overhears a conversation. In it, he learns that he will have a great chance to carry out the thing - that the old pawnbroker he wants to murder will be alone at home at 7:00 the next day. (I couldn’t be discreet after all, sorry). Anyway, right after that he changes his mind back to doing the thing, he even becomes more keen to do it, and actually realises it. (To be continued)
