- 8 янв.Dear Students, The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) remains deeply committed to recognising academic excellence and the hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance demonstrated by our students. Latin Awards represent one of the highest forms of academic distinction, and we understand the pride and personal significance attached to them; for students, families, and communities alike. At the same time, UCC has a responsibility to ensure that all academic awards are granted fairly, consistently, and in alignment with clearly defined institutional standards that support the integrity of our qualifications and our internal quality assurance processes. Institutional Autonomy and Award Criteria Each university in Jamaica and across the Caribbean independently determines its grading schemes, academic policies, and award criteria. While national and regional bodies provide oversight of quality and recognition, the University Council of Jamaica does not dictate Latin Award criteria. These determinations are made by individual institutions based on their academic philosophy, programme structure, and quality benchmarks. Students who wish to do so are therefore encouraged to conduct their own research and benchmark practices across local and regional universities. This can be a helpful exercise in understanding equivalence, while also recognising that differences in criteria do not imply inequity; rather, they reflect institutional autonomy and rigor. Perspective from Employers and Graduate Studies It is also important to share a broader perspective beyond awards themselves. Across the Caribbean, employers typically place limitedemphasis on Latin Awards when making hiring decisions. Instead, they focus on: Performance in specialised and discipline-specific courses Practical competence and readiness for the field The length of time taken to complete the degree and number of attempts taken to master required competencies Similarly, for those exploring graduate studies, the cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is the primary academic metric considered, rather than the presence or absence of a Latin Award. Understanding the Academic Journey UCC recognises that the first two years of tertiary education represent a significant period of transition. Students are adapting to academic expectations, learning styles, time management demands, and often balancing financial and personal responsibilities. However, it is the third and fourth years of study that carry the greatest academic weight, particularly for honours consideration. These years are intended to reflect maturity, consistency, and mastery of discipline-specific knowledge. To support success during this critical phase, students are strongly encouraged to: Engage in early and realistic financial planning to minimise disruptions to study Ensure they are academically prepared for upper-level coursework Aim to pass courses on the first attempt, with a minimum grade of B or higher, as consistency and progression are central to honours eligibility A Shared Commitment UCC’s approach seeks to balance compassion with fairness; honouring achievement while upholding standards that protect the value of every degree awarded. Latin Awards remain a prestigious distinction, but they are only one measure of success within a broader academic and professional journey. We remain committed to supporting all students in achieving their personal and professional goals and encourage ongoing dialogue, informed decision-making, and proactive academic planning as you progress through your studies. As we work together to support your academic progress, please review the updated Fall 2025 Academic Paths to Completion of your courses as outlined below. These options are designed to provide flexibility while helping you stay on track. Option 1: Complete Coursework and Final Assessments (Primary Pathway) The Academic Affairs Division has extended the teaching period to December 13, 2025. All coursework extensions close December 15, 2025. Final assessments have begun and are scheduled to be completed by December 20, 2025. Please monitor your course page on Moodle for updates. Alternative/Resit Assessments: If you are scheduled for an alternative or resit exam, you will have access to the Fall 2025 course page on Moodle. If the assessment is a group activity, please contact your Programme Coordinator or Lecturer to discuss next steps. Option 2: Coursework Completion Only (If You Need More Time) We recognize that many students are still regaining access to electricity, internet, and other necessities. If you are unable to sit your final assessments at this time, you are encouraged to complete your coursework as possible. Students who complete their coursework and achieve a minimum of 50% will be eligible to complete an alternative examination in April 2026. The alternative examination fees will be waived. For Coursework-Only Courses: If your course does not carry a final assessment and you cannot complete the coursework by December 15: A “W” grade will be assigned. You will be required to repeat the course in Spring 2026 at no cost if you have paid full fee for Fall 2025. All Fall 2025 coursework submissions will be void and must be redone in Spring 2026. Option 3: Course Withdrawal (Only If Options 1 and 2 Are Not Possible) If you are unable to complete your coursework by December 15, 2025, please submit an Add/Drop Form indicating the courses you cannot complete by December 16, 2025. Please upload the Add/From Form using the portal here: https://forms.gle/u2tCftZHvT6LHra7A A “W” grade will be assigned. You will need to redo the course in Spring 2026 at 50% of the cost if you have already paid 50% in Fall. If you have only paid 30%, you will be required to pay the balance of 20%. - 4 июл. 2025 г.Student Update – Town Hall Meeting Highlights (June 28, 2025) During the town hall meeting held on June 28, 2025, the administration confirmed that tuition fees will increase by 3% for the upcoming academic year, effective Fall 2025. It was noted that the revised tuition will be • J$47,000 for three-credit courses, • J$23,500 for foundation courses, and • J$16,000 for UCC 101. They advised that rates for non-Jamaican students have not yet been finalized and will be communicated at a later date. Although this was not fully discussed at the meeting, students on this pathway will be required to sign a contract outlining the expectations of the program. Finally, the administration informed students that the university is undergoing a re-accreditation process with the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ). They reminded students that UCC’s previous accreditation period ran from 2019 to 2025 and emphasized that the current review is a routine process to renew this status.
