​🔆 BRICS Environment Meeting & SAFTA Fraud Crackdown ​🌟 Summary ✅ Ministry : Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change / Ministry of Finance. ✅ Scheme/Event : BRICS Environment Working Group / SAFTA Customs Enforcement. ✅ Venue : Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. ✅ Objective : To foster international environmental resilience and curb large-scale customs evasion undermining domestic agriculture. ✅ One-line : India hosted the BRICS Environment Working Group to address climate resilience, while the DRI dismantled a massive areca nut import syndicate exploiting SAFTA provisions. ​♻️ Key Highlights 🔹 BRICS Environment Priorities : The BRICS Environment Working Group meetings (August 17-18, 2026) focused on promoting sustainable lifestyles, forest fire management, and community-led climate adaptation. The Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development (established in 2024) spearheaded consensus-building. 🔹 SAFTA Import Fraud (DRI) : The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) dismantled a syndicate importing South-East Asian areca nuts via Bangladesh to falsely claim 100% Basic Customs Duty (BCD) exemptions under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement. 🔹 Financial Impact : The operation revealed a massive revenue loss exceeding ₹2,500 crore, leading to the seizure of 160 MT of areca nuts and the arrest of nine individuals. The license of a key Customs Broker firm was also suspended. ​🔍 Background ✅ SAFTA Rules of Origin : Imports under SAFTA are fully exempt from customs duty only if they strictly meet the prescribed Rules of Origin criteria.
