People often search for some idea to cling to or strive to acquire something; many stories in the Upanishads and other religious texts speak about this. True self-knowledge occurs only when a person is ready to sacrifice everything, cast aside all aspects of the self, and renounce even the very desire for anything including the desire for "self knowledge" itself. When a person displays profound selflessness and empathy, the ego transcends its own limitations: the boundaries of individuality collapse, and the person merges with Being or with the Divine principle.
