From Ibn Rajab's Latā'if al Ma'ārif: “If I do not perform pilgrimage to the House and tread upon its quarters, then I have journeyed in pilgrimage to the One never absent from remembrance. Thus I entered iḥrām from my very moment by casting off my deficiencies, and I circumambulate and strive amidst subtle divine graces and overflowing generosity. My Ṣafā is the purification of myself from my lower traits, and my Marwah is the nobility of my heart emptied of all besides love for Him. In the ʿArafāt of intimacy with Allah is my standing, and my Muzdalifah is drawing near to Him until the Resurrection. My staying in Minā is the abiding of my deepest hopes within me, and the casting of my pebbles is the hurling of the embers of longing within my breast. The marking and sacrifice of my offering is the slaughter of my ego through subduing it, and my shedding away is the effacement of created things from the innermost secret. Whoever seeks departure after completing the rites — as for me, I remain forever abiding in my pilgrimage, with no departure at all.” (AI translation)
