The Ruling on Earning Income from Social Media Advertisements Containing Prohibited Content By: Shaykh Prof. Muḥammad bin Gamāl al-Suyūṭī al-Ḥanbalī Introduction: This is an important legal question requiring careful juristic analysis, since it relates to the source of income, the nature of the advertisements, and the degree of participation or assistance in prohibited acts. 1. The Basic Ruling on Advertising Revenue: In principle, income derived from advertisements is permissible, provided the advertisements themselves are lawful and do not involve anything prohibited, such as promoting sin, spreading images of immodesty, music, lying, or deceit. The legal basis for this ruling is the Qur’anic injunction: “And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression” (Qur’an, al-Mā’idah 5:2). Any income gained through assisting in sin is impermissible. 2. Ruling on Ads Containing Images of Immodestly Dressed Women: If the advertisements contain images of women who are immodestly dressed (i.e., exposing their ʿawrah or appearing in an Islamically prohibited manner), then displaying or promoting these ads is prohibited. This constitutes assistance in spreading immorality, and Allah says: “Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread among those who have believed will have a painful punishment” (Qur’an, al-Nūr 24:19). Therefore, if the advertiser knowingly allows such ads, the income derived from them is unlawful. 3. Conditions for Permissibility: • Receiving payment from advertisements is permissible if the following conditions are met: 1. The advertisements themselves are lawful in essence (e.g., books, permissible trade, education). 2. They contain no prohibited images, sounds, or messages. 3. The account holder does not intentionally promote prohibited material. 4. Reasonable efforts are made to filter or limit unlawful content. • It is prohibited to receive payment in the following situations: 1. When the person knows that most or all ads contain clear violations. 2. When one personally selects ads that include immodesty, music, or calls to sin. 3. When the business model is built upon the circulation of prohibited content. 4. Legal Principle: “Whatever Leads to the Prohibited is Prohibited”: If prohibited advertisements are the main source of revenue, then the earnings are unlawful, since they constitute indirect assistance in sin. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah stated: “Every wealth earned through disobedience to Allah is impure, and the person who earns it is sinful.” (Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā, 29/348). 5. Recommended Precautions: • Content creators and account holders should use advertisement settings to block or minimise prohibited content. • If some earnings are known to be unlawful, they should be discarded and only lawful income kept. • If lawful and unlawful earnings are mixed and cannot be distinguished, it is recommended to give away the estimated unlawful portion in charity. Conclusion (Hanbali Position): Earning income from permissible advertisements that do not involve prohibited content is lawful. However, income derived from promoting prohibited material—such as immodesty, music, or other sins—is prohibited. If the individual is unaware or did not intend to promote such content, they are not sinful, but it is praiseworthy to avoid doubtful matters and purify mixed earnings.
