AUGUST 16: THE FRANCISCAN MARTYRS OF TOLEDO Blessed Victor Chumillas Fernandez and companions Priests, Religious Brothers, and Martyrs Died: 1936 --- This is a group of 22 Spanish martyrs, all of whom were professed members of the Franciscan Friars Minor. Eight of them were priests while the rest were religious brothers or clerics. They were all killed during the anti-Catholic Spanish Revolution. Twenty of them were martyred on the same day by being shot. One was killed after a month, and the other also after a month.

AUGUST 15: THE HOLY SCULPTOR Blessed Claudio Granzotto Religious Brother Died: 1947 --- He was an Italian Franciscan brother. His original name was Riccardo. He was a sculptor. He even won a competition on sculpting. When he became a Franciscan, he humbly declined to become a priest. He continued sculpting religious images. Spent very long hours of prayer before the Holy Eucharist, far beyond the prayers established by the rule, praying for sinners, for the sanctification of priests, and for the Church.

A MURDERED ELDERLY IRAQI NUN Servant of God Cecilia Moshe Hanna --- Today is the death anniversary of the Servant of God Cecilia Moshe Hanna. She was an Iraqi nun from the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She belonged to the Chaldean Catholic Church which is in full communion with Rome. She was attacked by three Islamic terrorists inside her convent. She was alone at that time. They stabbed her repeatedly, slit her throat, and beheaded her. She was 71-years old.

AUGUST 15: SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY --- The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the Marian dogmas of the Catholic Church. Pope Pius XII solemnly proclaimed this in 1950. He declared, “We proclaim and define it to be a dogma revealed by God that the immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven.”

AUGUST 14: THE PATRON OF BEER BREWING Saint Arnold of Soissons Bishop Died: 1087 --- He was a Flemish bishop who is also known as St. Arnulf. He worked as a soldier before becoming a Benedictine monk. He became an abbot and then a bishop. He retired from his post some time later. He was known for brewing beer. He encouraged local peasants to drink beer, instead of water, due to its "gift of health". During the brewing process the water was boiled and thus freed of pathogens, making the beer safer to drink that time. --- Saint Arnold, please bless all drinkers and brewers so that they might experience good things from their alcohol and not succumb to sin or foolishness in their intoxication. Amen.

Millions of tragedies throughout Europe

THE LARGEST GROUP TO BE CANONIZED --- The biggest ever canonization in the history of the Church took place on May 12, 2013 when Antonio Pezzulla (also known as Antonio Primaldo) and his 800 (or 813) companions were proclaimed saints in one ceremony by Pope Francis. Collectively known as the “Martyrs of Otranto,” these martyrs were all laypersons who were killed by Muslims in 1480. The names of Antonio’s companions are unknown.

AUGUST 14: THE HOLY MARTYRS OF OTRANTO Saint Antonio Pezzulla and 800 Companions Martyrs Died: 1480 --- In 1480, a Muslim army besieged the city of Otranto. They rounded up approximately eight hundred men in the city, ages fifteen and up. The inhabitants were taken to the nearby Minerva hill and forced to make a choice: to die or to deny Christ. An elderly weaver, Antonio Pezzulla, replied on behalf of everyone that they would have preferred death. He was the first to be beheaded, which is why he was nicknamed “Primaldo.”

AN ALL-AROUND BRAZILIAN BISHOP Venerable Antonio de Almeida Lustosa --- Today is the death anniversary of the Ven. Antonio de Almeida Lustosa. He was a Brazilian Salesian archbishop. He introduced a range of innovations from media to new parishes and seminaries. He wrote children's literature and music in addition to hagiographical and theological works. He wrote numerous newspaper articles. He established archdiocesan health posts for the poor and inaugurated a soup kitchen for the poor.

HOLY POPES WHO RESIGNED --- Among the 266 popes of the Roman Catholic Church, five allegedly resigned and 6 historically resigned. Of these 11 popes, three are considered saints. St. Pontian allegedly resigned in exile to give way to the election of a new pope. St. Marcellinus is considered to have resigned after he turned away from Christianity by offering to the gods (but he repented after). St. Celestine V felt that his skills were not enough for him to lead as Pope, so he resigned to protect the Church.
