Neuropeptides specify and reprogram division of labor in the leafcutter ant Atta cephalotes (2025) Social insects offer powerful models to investigate mechanisms of elaborate individual behaviors comprising a cooperative community. Workers of the leafcutter ant genus Atta are extreme examples of behavioral segregation among phenotypically distinct worker types. We utilize this worker system to test the molecular underpinnings of behavioral programming and the extent of plasticity to reprogramming. We identify specific neuropeptides mediating worker division of labor in A. cephalotes, finding two neuropeptides associated with characteristic behaviors of leaf cutting and of brood care. Genetic knockdown or injection of these neuropeptides led to a stark gain or loss of each behavior and to transcriptomic shifts toward gene pathways expressed in the natural castes. We also reveal global similarities between worker transcriptomes of the eusocial mammal, the naked mole-rat H. glaber, with orthologous A. cephalotes workers. This work underscores the essential function of neuropeptides in establishing complex social behavior and a remarkable plasticity among individual behavioral types.

Novel color via stimulation of individual photoreceptors at population scale (2025) файналли, новые цвета и рукотворный тюнинг сетчатки "We introduce a principle, Oz, for displaying color imagery: directly controlling the human eye’s photoreceptor activity via cell-by-cell light delivery. Theoretically, novel colors are possible through bypassing the constraints set by the cone spectral sensitivities and activating M cone cells exclusively. In practice, we confirm a partial expansion of colorspace toward that theoretical ideal. Attempting to activate M cones exclusively is shown to elicit a color beyond the natural human gamut, formally measured with color matching by human subjects. They describe the color as blue-green of unprecedented saturation. Further experiments show that subjects perceive Oz colors in image and video form. The prototype targets laser microdoses to thousands of spectrally classified cones under fixational eye motion. These results are proof-of-principle for programmable control over individual photoreceptors at population scale."

Soft Biological Actuators for Meter-Scale Homeostatic Biohybrid Robots (2025) 1на1 с робопсом бостон динамикс "Skeletal muscle’s elegant protein-based architecture powers motion throughout the animal kingdom, with its constituent actomyosin complexes driving intra- and extra-cellular motion. Classical motors and recently developed soft actuators cannot match the packing density and contractility of individual muscle fibers that scale to power the motion of ants and elephants alike. Accordingly, the interdisciplinary fields of robotics and tissue engineering have combined efforts to build living muscle actuators that can power a new class of robots to be more energy-efficient, dexterous, and safe than existing motor-powered and hydraulic paradigms. Doing so ethically and at scale─creating meter-scale tissue constructs from sustainable muscle progenitor cell lines─has inspired innovations in biomaterials and tissue culture methodology. We weave discussions of muscle cell biology, materials chemistry, tissue engineering, and biohybrid design to review the state of the art in soft actuator biofabrication. Looking forward, we outline a vision for meter-scale biohybrid robotic systems and tie discussions of recent progress to long-term research goals."
