The Orphan Trains Between 1854 and 1929, an estimated 200,000 to 250,000 children were transported by train from crowded cities in the eastern United States to families in rural communities. The official goal was to give abandoned, orphaned, or impoverished children a better future. However, historical records also show that not every child was actually an orphan. Some still had one or even both parents, and not every placement resulted in a loving home. While many children found caring families, others were primarily used as labor. In Jewish tradition, mirrors are still covered during Shiva, the period of mourning after someone has passed. And in old European folklore, people believed that looking into a mirror after death could invite spirits, bad luck, or even another death in the family. So the question becomes deeper. Why did so many different cultures treat mirrors with caution? Were they afraid of the reflection? Or did they know that a mirror was more than glass? Maybe the mirror was seen as a doorway.
