  • Wire - know what changed, know what matters The global intelligence feed, filtered hard, with the “so what” attached. Every story carries The Wire Takeaway - not “Samsung raises foundry prices” but “your wafer costs just went up 10-15%, call your suppliers this week. Filter by News type, sector, region to get fully personalised and localised news. Weekly reports roll it up so you can skim Monday morning and get back to building. Reading everything is a full-time job. You already have one. https://wire.fusion-42.com/wire-frontend

  • Scout - know who just got funded Newly funded startups, pre-seed to Series B, as the rounds happen. Every round in your space is intelligence. A competitor raising £8m tells you what investors are paying for. A fund backing three companies adjacent to yours tells you exactly who to email next. https://scout.fusion-42.com/scout-frontend

  • How did SpaceX become a $2.5tn company? Everyone's arguing whether it's worth it. Wrong question. The question is how it got there, because it's not a valuation, it's a story with a price tag. And once you see the mechanism, you can't unsee it. Same trick, three times over, and the next one still to come. $10tn market cap company on its way https://open.substack.com/pub/derekwatsonfusion42/p/how-did-spacex-get-to-be-a-25tn-company

  • Stop waiting for a better model. There isn't a meaningfully better one coming that changes your business, and deep down you already know it. The models are good enough. Infrastructure's built, capital's in, access is solved. None of that is the moat. Build the real thing underneath and you stop watching model releases altogether, every one just makes you faster. The labs aren't racing you. They're powering you. The labs sell answers. The money is in the work. The distance between the two is the entire game, and it's the one place a billion-user model structurally cannot go. Two years ago I said software would lose its premium. They call it the SaaSpocalypse now. I called what replaced it too. Service as Software, the result delivered instead of the tool, and the way forward turned out to be exactly this: verticalised, specialist, owns the outcome. BUT building it is actually really hard. So we all sit around waiting for the labs to hand us a magic pill, because hoping is easier than building. They won't hand you one, and that gap is the entire opportunity. Electricity as a commodity is worthless. Plug a kettle in and Bob's your uncle. Now go build kettles. https://open.substack.com/pub/derekwatsonfusion42/p/the-ai-labs-wont-follow-you-down

  • Sci-Fi vs Reality Ready Player One (2018): Sci-Fi vs Reality The future already happened. It was just fiction first. Fiction gave us one OASIS. Reality gave us many, and none of them talk to each other. The film’s biggest blind spot wasn’t the tech; it was the brutal business model. Why would Roblox want you to take your digital goods to Meta's world? Zero incentive. Instead, we got walled gardens. But that gap, that fragmentation, is where the real opportunity for founders lives. Companies like Ixana in Cape Town are building the middleware, the literal plumbing, to bridge these fortresses. They’re creating the universal translators needed for the unified experience fiction promised. The giants built the islands. The startups are building the bridges. What’s left to build? The universal passport – your portable, user-owned digital identity that plugs into any virtual world. For the ❤️ of startups 🔗 Read the full article

  • Domain Histories. The best founders are students of history — Privacy & Identity You have 200 passwords. The industry that created that problem now wants to sell you the solution. This endless login chaos isn't some grand conspiracy; it's the result of the internet being built for machines, not people. Identity was a patch, bolted on with every new service demanding a separate username and password. This created a usability nightmare and a fragmented attack surface — a goldmine for hackers and data brokers. The most interesting work now is infrastructure. Companies like Beyond Identity and 1Kosmos are killing the password with device-bound keys and private blockchains. The real challenge isn't the tech; it's the sales cycle. You're selling trust to risk-averse CISOs who ask "Who do we sue if this goes wrong?" before "How does it work?" Is your solution truly eliminating the core problem, or just managing the symptoms? • Startup Principles for an AI World — Know Your Models The old playbook of deep technical expertise meant knowing how to build every brick in your stack. Now, the stack is a menu, and your most critical skill is knowing what to order. Using the wrong AI model isn't just a technical misstep; it's a product and cost architecture flaw. You’re no longer aiming to build the engine, but to drive it with precision and efficiency. Is your team optimising for capability or just burning cash on the biggest LLM? • Sci-Fi vs Reality — Minority Report (2002): Sci-Fi vs Reality Sci-Fi vs Reality Minority Report (2002): Sci-Fi vs Reality In 2002, Minority Report showed us gesture interfaces as effortless, dancelike control. Twenty years later, we still use mice. Turns out, holding your arms up like an orchestra conductor for eight hours a day presents a practical problem — what designers call 'gorilla arm.' The writers got the vision right, but they glossed over the messy, human details, and the founders solving those messy problems are building the future. What's the interoperable layer for spatial computing that lets developers build once and deploy everywhere? For the ❤️ of startups 🔗 Read the full article

  • Domain Histories. The best founders are students of history — Data Infrastructure & Analytics Domain Histories. The best founders are students of history Data Infrastructure & Analytics Every company claims to be data-driven. Almost none can query last week's data. For decades, we've bought new 'magic boxes', hoping to untangle the mess of pipelines and broken dashboards. The real problem isn't the tech; it's our understanding of history. The original problem wasn't a lack of data, but a lack of access. On-prem monoliths created data gatekeepers. The cloud killed that model. Then the cloud data warehouse became a data swamp, leading to the rise of the Modern Data Stack. Now, AI is dissolving the line between data warehouse and AI platform. Your data platform is now your AI platform. The graveyard of failed data companies teaches a brutal lesson: don't build a single pane of glass, don't get squeezed by platform incumbents, and don't ignore workflow. Find one painful, specific problem and solve it ten times better. The future-defining battle between Snowflake (structured analytics) and Databricks (unstructured, AI-ready data) is intense. Databricks' soaring valuation suggests the market believes a platform built for AI from the ground up holds the long-term advantage. The company that stores your data is best positioned to own your AI strategy. The arms race has moved from storage to intelligence. Is your current data strategy built for passive analytics or active intelligence? For the ❤️ of startups 🔗 Read the full article

  • The F42 AI Brief — The F42 AI Brief #063 More Compute. More Control. The US House just passed a bill to accelerate datacenter construction for AI infrastructure. Here's the thing: this isn't just about cutting red tape. If you're building compute-intensive AI applications, the playing field for securing resources could shift faster than anticipated. Plan for available compute to come online sooner. For the ❤️ of startups 🔗 Read the full article

  • Startup Principles for an AI World Own The Wedge AI made point solutions a trap. Building a better single feature is no longer defensible when incumbents bundle AI capabilities for free. The new playbook isn't about selling a smarter hammer; it's about automating an entire workflow and making the old way obsolete. Don’t build an AI to summarise notes – build the system that schedules, records, summarises, creates actions, and drafts the follow-up email. Are you building a feature destined to be commoditised, or an entire workflow that redefines how business gets done? For the ❤️ of startups 🔗 Read the full article

  • Sci-Fi vs Reality I Robot (2004): Sci-Fi vs Reality Another great movie, I am so happy I started this series so I have a valid excuse to watch all these movies again. The writers of I, Robot correctly identified AI alignment as the core problem. The film's premise that Asimov's Three Laws could be a simple, hard-coded solution is where they missed it. You can't just install ethics. The complexity of real-world morality, and the ambiguity in simple rules, leads to catastrophic outcomes when an AI interprets them too literally – exactly what happened with VIKI. Building humanoids is one thing, but who's building the auditable safety and alignment tools to govern them? The ethics and compliance OS for AI is still up for grabs. Should ethical frameworks for AI be just as much a product as the AI itself? For the ❤️ of startups 🔗 Read the full article

  • Domain Histories. The best founders are students of history — Open Source Commercialisation Open source won the developer, but founders keep losing the business. The central paradox: the free, unrestricted nature of open source makes monetisation brutally hard. Too many fall in love with their community of users, forgetting to build a product for their customers. Product-market fit and community-market fit are two entirely different beasts. One gets you love, the other gets you paid. The history shows an evolution: from services (Red Hat) to open core (Sentry) to today's managed cloud wars. The value has moved from code to managed hosting, security, and SLAs. Private Equity's £1.5bn acquisition of Couchbase signals a new endgame: sustainable, profitable revenue from sticky cloud services. Are you building for a community, or for customers who pay the bills? For the ❤️ of startups 🔗 Read the full article

  • The F42 AI Brief #062 I am going to see everything you do Governments are mandating "lawful use" clauses in AI contracts. This means your models won't be exempt from military or intelligence applications if your government contract says so. This isn't about ethics; it's about commercial reality. If you are pitching government deals, you must include a compliance appendix showing how your model handles dual-use scenarios. Another AI pioneer, Yoshua Bengio, is teaming up with Xie Saining and NVIDIA to explore AI beyond LLMs. If your R&D is 100% focused on LLMs, you need to broaden your scope. This could well be where the real value sits for the next decade. Are you ready for what comes next? For the ❤️ of startups 🔗 Read the full article
