In our movement there's a real tendency to get worked up into a frenzy. To pour all your energy and attention into this whole conspiracy world of ours. And when folks do that, it becomes an obsession. They start seeing the New World Order in every crack and crevice in the road, every turn a piece of some grand conspiracy. That's not a life to live. At the end of the day, the price of liberty is eternal vigilance. Our children and our children's children are going to inherit this struggle against the predator class. That's just the way it is. So in the meantime... how do you want to live your life? I want to encourage you to still wake up and focus on what you're grateful for. Take time to smell the roses, as they say. Have some fun. So let me go ahead and tell you who our mystery keynote was. I'd been dropping hints for weeks. Old school freedom guy, decades in the game. Turns out it's closer to five decades. One of the hints I gave during the summit was that a book of his ran as an advertisement on Alex Jones' Infowars for years back in the day. That book is Strategic Relocation. ⚡️ Which means our mystery keynote was none other than Joel Skousen. If the name is new to you, here's the short version. Joel is a former Navy and Marine Corps fighter pilot turned architect. He started writing The Secure Home in 1979, which makes him one of the actual pioneers of the modern preparedness movement, not somebody who showed up after 2020. He's been publishing the World Affairs Brief every Friday for decades. He wrote Strategic Relocation: North American Guide to Safe Places, which is still considered the definitive reference on threat-based relocation. He wrote a 700-page book on securing a home or retreat. And he and his son, a structural engineer, co-authored The High Security Shelter Book with actual architectural plans in it. He's designed high security residences and retreats all over North America, Canada, and parts of Latin America. He turns 80 next month and he is not slowing down. He also spoke at Exit & Build 2 back in 2022, so it's been about four years since we've had him with us. And I'll be straight with you... Joel paints a very different picture than most of our speakers. I tend to be a lot more optimistic than he is. During Q&A I asked him point blank whether he's optimistic about the prospects for liberty. His answer stopped the chat cold. He said he is not optimistic, and it's on purpose... because optimists don't prepare. Fifty years of teaching and mentoring people has shown him that if folks are handed any hope of a savior that lets them skip the hard work, they'll take it every time. Somebody in the chat said it was cold water to the face. That's about right. He also made a point that I think this audience in particular needs to sit with. He said most people in our movement are currently building with one foot in the establishment and one foot out, leaning on the remnants of good law we still have. His whole talk was about what happens when that arrangement stops working. He walked through his EMP and grid-down scenario and why the power wouldn't come back for at least a year (the long-distance transformers are made in Germany, South Korea, and China, and we don't stockpile them). He covered why he's downgraded Utah and Idaho in the latest edition of Strategic Relocation, why he looks west of the Mississippi, and the population density math behind all of it. He got into data centers as surveillance infrastructure. Now, as I always share, we can't spend all our energy analyzing the predator class and the technocracy they're building. That's the reactionary trap. But there absolutely is a place for clear-eyed analysis, so we can plan better, prepare better, and get smarter about our exit and build goals. That's exactly what Joel brings, and it's why I wanted him on that stage. We can't be naive about the reality we're facing. A common misunderstanding with the whole Exit and Build thing is that it is necessary to get land out in the country. While that is ideal, its not necessary when incorporating exit and build into your life. You can exit as many centralized, coercive, and corrupt institutions as you can while building a life in the parallel economy and with decentralized systems, even if you are in the heart of the city. While you are more vulnerable in the city, there are still many actions to take to overcome vulnerability to the system and become as independent of it as you can.
