Iran says Hormuz shipping deal nears completion, but U.S. must meet conditions Iran said an agreement with Oman establishing new shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz is nearing completion, but warned that the critical energy corridor won’t reopen until the United States meets a broader set of demands, Reuters reported. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Sunday that the shipping agreement was in its final stages. The arrangement would establish routes for vessels to use if and when commercial traffic resumes. Before its closure, the Strait of Hormuz handled about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Iran blocked the waterway following U.S. and Israeli attacks. Washington and Tehran reached a ceasefire in June, but tensions escalated again after the U.S. reimposed a blockade on Iranian shipping in the Gulf in July. The state-owned Ethiopian Shipping & Logistics (ESL) unveiled its most ambitious fleet plan yet last week, a push to add 16 vessels and lift the cargo it handles by 161pc through 2031. It did so having bought none of the six ships it had planned to buy this year. Senior executives blamed slow procurement, not a change of heart. The missed target still raises questions about how fast the state giant can deliver one of the largest expansions in its history. Chat 👇 @ehio2021

Current Impact:Regional conflict and threats to shipping have caused some vessels to divert around the Cape of Good Hope, increasing transit times and freight costs. 3. Suez Canal Location: Egypt. Connects: Mediterranean Sea « Red Sea. Importance: One of the world's busiest trade routes. Saves about 7,000 km compared with sailing around Africa. Conflict Impact:if Bab el-Mandeb becomes unsafe, fewer ships can reach the Suez Canal, reducing traffic and increasing shipping costs. Chat 👇 @mkt_hq
The Strait of Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Suez Canal are the world's three most important maritime chokepoints. Together, they carry a large share of global oil, LNG, and container cargo. Any conflict affecting these routes can disrupt international trade. 1. Strait of Hormuz Location: Between Iran and Oman/UAE. Connects: Persian Gulf « Gulf of Oman « Arabian Sea. Importance:Around 20% of the world's oil passes through this narrow waterway. Major exporters include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, UAE, and Qatar. US-Iran Conflict Impact:This is the most sensitive chokepoint during tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Military activity has led to reduced commercial shipping, higher insurance costs, and increased oil prices. 2. Bab el-Mandeb Strait Location: Between Yemen and Djibouti/Eritrea. Connects: Red Sea « Gulf of Aden. Importance:Essential for ships traveling between Asia and Europe through the Suez Canal.
Saudi Arabia launches the world’s largest truck marshalling area at Jeddah port JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia has inaugurated the world’s largest truck marshalling area, spanning 1 million sq. meters, at Jeddah Islamic Port while the Saudi Ports Authority signed seven agreements with companies worth investments exceeding SR1 billion ($266.9 million) on the sidelines of the launch. The marshalling area, inaugurated by Minister of Transport and Logistics Services Saleh Al-Jasser, has been designated as the first transit point for trucks heading to Jeddah Port before proceeding to gates 4-9, and will increase operational capacity, reduce congestion, and improve the flow of truck traffic. Al-Jasser told Al-Eqtisadiah that the new truck area at the port raises the efficiency of logistics operations and trade movement, affirming that the logistics sector has adapted to shifts in global shipping traffic by redirecting trade… For more 👇 https://www.arabnews.com/node/2651263/business-economy Chat 👇 @ethio2021
Container colors are more than just branding—they're a language spoken across global supply chains. For experienced logistics professionals, a container's color often provides an instant clue about the shipping line, its network, and sometimes even the trade lanes it commonly serves. It is important to remember that container color is only a visual identifier—not an operational standard. Ownership, routing, leasing arrangements, & container interchange mean that a container's movement is determined by documentation, container numbers (ISO 6346), and shipping instructions—not its paint. As supply chain professionals, understanding these small visual cues helps us: ✅ Identify major ocean carriers quickly ✅ Improve situational awareness during yard and terminal operations ✅ Enhance communication between logistics teams ✅ Appreciate the scale and diversity of global maritime trade Which shipping line's containers do you see most often in your daily operations? 7000 TEU container vessel "GFS Galaxy" was hit by an Iranian attack whilst transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Reports from UKMTO this morning states the vessel was hit aft causing a fire onboard. Crew has abandoned the ship into a lifeboat. The vessel is owned and operated by Global Feeder Shipping, itself owned by Abu Dhabi Ports Group in UAE. It was transiting outbound on the GALEX service connecting Jebel Ali, Dammam and Bahrain to Port Klang, Dachan Bay, Xiamen, Qingdao and Busan. As a consequence, US has initiated new large scale attacks on Iran. In return, Iran has now declared the Strait of Hormuz closed. Attacks are still ongoing at the time of writing this update (05:00 CET), and Iran has launched attacks on facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE and Jordan. Today is day 965 of the Red Sea crisis and day 134 of the Hormuz crisis Chat 👇 @ethio2021
Maersk to Restore Second Route with US-Flagged Vessels in the Suez-Red Sea Days after reporting it would begin a gradual resumption of routes transiting the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, Maersk announced plans for a second route to resume the transits. The company, so far, has stuck to its plans to restore a few routes while saying it continues to monitor the security situation and has contingency plans in place. The second route to resume the transits is one operated with U.S.-flagged vessels sailing from the East Coast of the United States to the Middle East and India. The Maersk Denver (6,200 TEU), which is currently heading to India, will make the first westbound sailing. The Maserk Chicago (6,188 TEU), which has recently departed Tangier Med and just entered the Mediterranean via Gibraltar, will make the first eastbound transit early next week. That is excellent news for regional logistics. The Galafi border crossing handles the vast majority of freight transit between the Port of Djibouti and Addis Ababa, so keeping this artery clear and functional is absolutely vital. Given the recent upgrades and heavy construction work along sections like the Dikhil-Doudou/Galafi corridor (under major initiatives like the World Bank and EU-backed Regional Economic Corridor project), an open and fully active road will immediately ease bottlenecks. Chat 👇 @ethio2021
CMA CGM set to overtake Maersk next year CMA CGM is on course to overtake Maersk as the world’s second-largest containerline by the end of 2027. Speaking to French business daily Les Echos last week, CMA CGM chairman and chief executive Rodolphe Saadé said the Marseille-headquartered carrier is on track to move past its Danish rival within the next 18 months. The end-2027 date might appear conservative. Based on Linerlytica data, CMA CGM will overtake Maersk by July 2027. The shift has been visible for some time. Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has already opened up a commanding lead at the top of the liner rankings, while Maersk has pursued a more disciplined fleet strategy as it pushes deeper into integrated logistics. CMA CGM, by contrast, has continued to add capacity aggressively while expanding its terminals, logistics, air cargo and inland transport interests. “Maersk’s fall in the rankings is entirely… For more 👇 https://splash247.com/cma-cgm-set-to-overtake-maersk-next-year/ Chat 👇 @ethio2021
CMA CGM ship hit by missile in Hormuz strait may go for scrapping, CEO says A CMA CGM container ship struck by Missile in the Strait of Hormuz in early May is so badly damaged that the French shipping group may send it for scrapping, its chief executive said on Friday. The attack on the CMA CGM San Antonio injured several members of the crew, who were evacuated. The ship is one of dozens of commercial vessels to be struck during the Iran war. "It was so damaged that we're wondering whether we should send it for scrapping," CMA CGM's Chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saade told a business conference in southern France. After being stranded in the strait for weeks, the San Antonio has been escorted to safety, he added, without giving further details. The group does not plan for now to start sending ships towards the Gulf again, he said… For more 👇 https://www.reuters.com/business/cma-cgm-ship-hit-by-missile-hormuz-strait-may-go-scrapping-ceo-says-2026-07-03/ Chat 👇 @ethio2021
US and Iran exchange strikes and accuse each other of violating ceasefire The US has conducted new strikes on Iran, following a drone attack on a Panama-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. US Central Command (Centcom) said it hit multiple targets across Iran in direct response to "continued aggression" against commercial shipping. In retaliation, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it has launched missiles and drones at US infrastructure in Kuwait and Bahrain, in a statement shared to state media. Following the exchange of fire, the US and Iran accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement. Centcom said in a statement, "Iran was given a chance to honor the ceasefire agreement but elected not to when its forces launched a one-way attack drone that hit MT Kiku," a Panama-flagged tanker. In response, it said, US fighter jets conducted strikes on 10 Iranian military targets at multiple… For more 👇 https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cdxdwkgqgq0o Chat 👇 @ethio2021

Ethiopia Cuts Turkey Cargo Transit Time From 40 Days to Nine Days Ethiopia’s maritime and logistics operator has reduced cargo transit time from Turkish ports to Ethiopia from more than 40 days to nine days, as the country seeks to improve supply chain efficiency and lower logistics costs for businesses. The new service, introduced by Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL), enables faster and direct movement of import cargo from Turkey to Ethiopia’s inland destinations, the company said. Over the past three months, 150 full container load (FCL) shipments have been transported through the arrangement in two rounds, supporting industries that depend on imported raw materials and equipment. The development comes days after ESL reported that it saved more than 500 million birr in operating costs over the past 10 months through cost reduction measures and tighter expense controls. Trump claims Strait of Hormuz will reopen as US-Iran deal reached, shippers and insurers remain cautious On June 15, US president Donald Trump announced that a deal had been reached between the US and Iran which would see the end of military operations, the removal of the US naval blockade in Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, questions still remain about the future of shipping through the strait – including safety concerns and uncertainty around Iranian tolls on vessels. ESL resumes fuel imports after 40 years In a significant operational recovery, state-owned Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL) has resumed handling the country’s petroleum imports, including from new international suppliers. This marks a historic first, as Ethiopia has now sourced fuel from within Africa. The Ethiopian government has diversified its procurement strategy to include West Asian markets and ports in western India. This shift comes amid disruptions to traditional oil supply routes and rising domestic demand, particularly for jet fuel. The demand for jet fuel is largely driven by Bole International Airport’s role as a major African aviation hub and the extensive operations of Ethiopian Airlines… A recent breakthrough saw Ethiopia import jet fuel from a terminal in Nigeria, operated by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery at Dangote Quays, Lekki, owned by billionaire Aliko Dangote.
