The World Bank pictures a rural Ethiopian mother, never able to open a bank account, now borrowing to start a business, and a displaced person in Addis Abeba, stripped of every paper document, “now digitally documented.” It is bankrolling a 350 million-dollar digital identity project. The numbers of ambition are real, as the government digitised more than 800 services, folded 23 agencies and 180 services into one Mesob counter, and enrolled more than 25 million people in "Fayda", a digital ID, across 55 services. #Digital #Government #Ethiopia

Ethiopia Hotel's roots reach back to 1963. It was built when Addis Abeba, short of beds for the first continental gathering of African leaders, pressed ministry offices, guesthouses and private homes into service. A site first meant for apartments was turned over to a hotel, designed by a Norwegian firm and built by a Greek contractor. It was set up as a share company owned by the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), Ethiopian Airlines, the government of the day and its first owner. Because it applies to every traveller applying for the B1/B2 visa category, two parents at a graduation may face two bonds, and a family could need to mobilise 30,000 dollars. About 20,000 applications were judged to require bonds, against roughly 2,000 expected; nearly half went unpaid. As a result, B-1 and B-2 issuance from participating countries fell by 83pc in 10 months. More than 800 services are digitised, yet only 15pc of integrated citizen services are fully online, a share the government hopes to lift to 70pc by 2027.
