In March, we deployed an RSAF aircraft to bring Singaporeans home from the Middle East, after commercial flights were no longer an option. Nisar and his family were among those on board. During the flight, he wrote a moving letter about their experience. I had the opportunity to meet Nisar and his family recently, and to hear firsthand what they had gone through. Their story is a powerful reminder that, in times of crisis, we will always look after one another. Happy to join residents yesterday for the reopening of Fuchun Community Club. The CC traces its roots to Hock Choon Village Community Centre, one of the People’s Association’s earliest rural community centres, opened by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in 1962. Its history mirrors Singapore’s own journey — growing and improving over the years, while remaining firmly anchored in the community. It was heartening to see community organisations, partners and students showcasing ideas to strengthen bonds and improve lives. This is what makes a community club special — a place where the spirit of gotong royong comes alive every day. Building a better home is a shared responsibility. The Government can provide the infrastructure and support. This morning, I hosted the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia and Sultan of Perak His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Shah to breakfast at the Istana. His Royal Highness has long been a good friend of Singapore, and it was good to reconnect since we last met in 2024. We discussed a variety of issues including strengthening ASEAN cooperation, as well as the many promising initiatives that Singapore and Malaysia are advancing together. Beyond geography, Singapore and Malaysia are bound by a shared history and strong people-to-people ties. I am confident that we will continue to work hand in hand to build our shared vision for the future, one which will yield benefits for both our peoples.

Happy to meet representatives from across Asia’s business community ahead of the 15th Asian Business Summit. The global business environment has changed. Geopolitical risks are now a reality that businesses have to navigate. But in Asia, we should do all we can to preserve a stable, predictable and rules-based environment where businesses can invest and operate with confidence. Singapore will continue to uphold these principles, including through ASEAN and wider regional frameworks like RCEP and the CPTPP. The situation in the Middle East remains volatile, and we continue to feel the effects here at home. That is why we are rolling out a second package of support measures to provide additional help for households and businesses. The package includes more CDC Vouchers, additional U-Save Rebates, enhanced support for lower-income families, and targeted assistance for SMEs, as well as eligible market and hawker centre stallholders. Saddened to learn of the passing of former Member of Parliament for Havelock, Mr Lim Soo Peng. As MP, Mr Lim worked hard to improve the living conditions of his residents, laying the foundations for the area’s subsequent urban transformation. After stepping down from politics, he devoted himself to serving the community. Appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1966, he went on to serve as a Home Team volunteer for an extraordinary 55 years, supporting inmates and those undergoing rehabilitation in our Prisons and Drug Rehabilitation Centres. He believed in listening to people, understanding their circumstances, and giving them a second chance. He was a steadfast advocate for their welfare, rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society. Mr Lim exemplified a lifetime of service and quiet dedication to others. Singapore owes pioneers like him a deep debt of gratitude. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
