I’d like to talk about a time when I had to change a plan that I’d been looking forward to for quite a while. It happened last summer when I was planning to go on a short trip with a couple of friends. We had arranged everything in advance: we had booked accommodation, planned a few activities, and were particularly excited about going hiking in the mountains. I’d been quite stressed with work at the time, so I was really looking forward to having a few days away and switching off completely. However, just a few days before we were supposed to leave, the weather forecast changed dramatically. Heavy rain and strong winds were expected throughout the weekend, and there were even warnings about possible flooding in some areas. At first, we thought about going anyway, because we didn’t want all our preparation to go to waste. But eventually, we realised that hiking in those conditions simply wasn’t worth the risk. So, rather than cancelling the whole trip, we decided to come up with a plan B. We changed our destination to a nearby city, where we could spend the weekend visiting museums, trying different restaurants and exploring the old town. Although it wasn’t what we had originally envisioned, it turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable. What I remember most is how disappointed I felt initially. I tend to plan things quite carefully, so having to change everything at the last minute was frustrating. Nevertheless, once we accepted that the original plan wasn’t realistic, we stopped focusing on what we were missing out on and started making the most of the alternative. Looking back, I think it was actually a valuable experience because it taught me that even the best-laid plans can fall apart, and sometimes being flexible is more important than sticking rigidly to your original idea. In the end, the trip was completely different from what I had expected, but I still came back feeling refreshed and happy.
