Building the knowledge behind the conversation. On 15 August 2026, TaYA, in partnership with the St. Paul Institute for Reproductive Health and Rights (SPIRHR), conducted a one-day orientation on Safe Abortion Care (SAC) and Self-Managed Abortion (SMA) for 25 peer educators. The orientation strengthened participants’ technical understanding while equipping them with communication skills and stigma-sensitive approaches to facilitate accurate, respectful, and informed conversations within their communities. As trusted peers, these young people can play an important role in creating spaces where adolescents and youth can ask questions, challenge misconceptions, and seek reliable information about their health without fear of judgment. Kerima Ali, a Peer Educator under the RBA Project, gained the knowledge and leadership skills to speak openly about GBV prevention, gender equality, and available support services. Through her role, she now leads peer discussions, shares information, and encourages young people to speak up, seek support, and make informed decisions. Sometimes, cultural beliefs can become a barrier to accessing accurate health information. Across our communities, different beliefs and assumptions shape the way we talk about Safe Abortion Care. When these assumptions are left unquestioned, they can create fear, silence, and stigma, making it harder for women and girls to seek the information and care they need. Safe Abortion Care is a sensitive issue, and talking about it does not mean abandoning our values or culture. It means creating space for respectful conversations, accurate information, and informed decisions. Let’s question stereotypes, listen without judgment, and promote a culture where seeking appropriate healthcare is met with understanding, dignity, and respect.
