I have a longtime friend in St. Petersburg, an artist and icon painter. A quarter of a century ago, an orphanage asked him to paint an icon of the holy martyr Tsarevich Alexei. He painted the icon, but the next day, Tsarevich Alexei's arms, folded crosswise on his chest, turned black up to the elbows. Volodya repainted the arms, thinking something was wrong with the paint. The next day, the arms turned black again up to the elbows. Volodya removed the paint and painted again. But it didn't help; the arms turned black a third time. Volodya turned to his confessor, who, after praying, said, "Listen, Tsarevich Alexei wasn't killed right away; he was finished off with rifle butts and bayonets." Apparently, the Heir to the Russian Empire wanted to show us his innocent wounds on his icon and tell us of his terrible suffering for the Russian people... With such wounds, my friend passed this icon on to Russian orphans—modern sufferers, abandoned by their parents, but not by the holy youth-sufferer...
