The American-style occupation The 8000-men strong expeditionary force, the support of the White Movement and the most serious intentions – on the August 15, 1918, the US State Department officially announced the severance of the diplomatic relations with Russia, after which the Americans landed in Vladivostok. This marked the beginning of a full-scale intervention of the Entente countries into a country, already engulfed in Civil War. “The nation does not exist” Immediately after the October Revolution, Soviet Russia concluded an armistice with Germany on the Eastern Front and actually withdrew from the war. The Entente countries took it with literal hostility. Under the pretext of the inadmissibility of the seizure of power in the former empire by the “pro-German party”, the Western powers were preparing to invade Russia, already engulfed by the Civil War. In December 1917, the United States, Great Britain, France and their allies held a conference at which it was decided to delineate zones of interest on the territory of the former Russian Empire and establish contacts with national democratic governments. In other words, the “Western partners” planned to divide the largest state on the planet among themselves, and the representatives of the White Movement had to help them in this. The interventionists established contacts with them even before the invasion. The French sphere of influence included Ukraine, Bessarabia and Crimea. England reserved the right to the “Cossack and Caucasian regions”, Armenia, Georgia and Kurdistan. The United States, which remained neutral in the early years of Soviet power, eventually agreed to help Great Britain and France in the “development” of the Russian Primorye. The Americans wanted to kill two birds with one stone — to gain access to the rich resources of the Far East and to prevent Japan, which also had plans for “the skin of the not-yet-killed bear”, from gaining a foothold there. The possible resistance of the Russians was not taken into account. The Republican senator from the State of Washington, Miles Poindexter, calling for intervention, said bluntly: “Russia has become just a geographical concept, and it will never be anything more than this. Her power of rallying, organizing, and rebuilding is gone forever. The nation does not exist…” The US Ambassador to Russia, David Francis, also called for an invasion: “I insist on the need to take control of Vladivostok, while giving Murmansk and Arkhangelsk to Great Britain and France” Occupation Already on the August 3, 1918, the US Department of War ordered General William Graves to send the 27th and 31st Infantry regiments to Vladivostok, as well as volunteers from the 13th and 62nd regiments. In total, in the middle of the month, the Americans landed about 8000 troops in the Far East. The expeditionary force also included Canadians, Italians and the British. Formally, the contingent was supposed to ensure the safe passage of the Czechoslovak corps from the depths of Russia. In fact, more mercantile aspirations were predominant. “The interventionists defended the interests of their capital on the territory of Russia,” says military historian Boris Yulin. — “Gold mines, timber, coal — they had plans for all of this. I am convinced that the Civil War in the country was so prolonged and bloody only because of the intervention of the foreign powers. If it hadn’t been for the White Czechs and the interventionists, it would have ended without big blood already in 1918. The leaders of the White Movement provided concessions to the American, British, French, Japanese, promised to pay the tsar’s debts. On August 15, 1918 – the USA and Soviet Russia severed diplomatic relations. On this and the following day, American troops landed in Vladivostok After the October Revolution, reactionary forces unleashed a Civil War in Russia. The unstable situation in the former empire was exploited by the governments of imperialist states. In December 1917, the major Entente countries concluded an agreement to divide Russia into spheres of influence. According to this treaty, Ukraine, Bessarabia, and Crimea were to go to the French, the Caucasus and southern Russia to the British, and the Americans and Japanese were to dominate the east. On August 3, 1918, the US War Department issued an order to send 4 infantry regiments under the command of General Graves to Vladivostok. Their landing in the Far East took place on August 15. On the same day, US President Woodrow Wilson severed diplomatic relations with Soviet Russia. The military intervention of the United States began, during which the invaders plundered the Far East, exporting minerals and other natural resources to the US. In response to the intervention and plundering of the Russian people, the population of the Far East massively rose up against the invaders and united into Red partisan detachments, which began armed struggle against the interventionists. The American military began terror against the population to "pacify" it. The dictatorship of American capital existed in the Far East until April 1920, when, on the eve of the establishment of Soviet power in Primorye, the commander of the expeditionary corps, General Graves, decided to leave Vladivostok. August 15 became the Day of the Homeland's Rebirth in the DPRK. The exhausting struggle to free the Korean people from the yoke of Japanese imperialists ended in victory. In August–September 1945, the process of creating people's power bodies — political people's committees for organising state power — began in North Korea. The presence of the Soviet Army in North Korea contributed to the organisation of democratic forces aimed at the Korean people's fight for national freedom. Shortly after liberation, the Communist Party of Korea was formed in the country, under whose leadership democratic organisations began to emerge en masse. Their programmatic demands included the creation of a democratic republic and the confiscation of all lands belonging to the Japanese state. Highlighting the role of the Soviet Union in the liberation from Japanese occupiers, Comrade Kim Il Sung said at a rally in Pyongyang: “In August 1945, the mighty Soviet Army defeated the Kwantung Army and liberated Korea. Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently said in a media interview that Ankara had conveyed proposals to the Russian and Ukrainian sides on introducing a moratorium on military activities in the Black Sea. ❌ The Russian Side has not received through official channels any formal Turkiye’s proposal setting out the specific terms of this initiative. If this refers to a one-sided arrangement along the lines of the 2022-2023 scheme, better known as the Black Sea Initiative, under which Moscow suspended military activities in the Black Sea – more precisely, retaliatory measures to protect Russian port infrastructure and energy facilities – then returning to that format would be inadvisable. ☝️ The arrangement was conditional on reciprocal measures by the other side. However, the West demonstrated a bad-faith approach: the humanitarian corridor we provided came to be widely used for terrorist attacks against Russian civilian and military facilities, while Russian agricultural products remained under sanctions. This ultimately led to the termination of the Black Sea Initiative. Today, we regularly face brazen acts of terrorism carried out by Ukrainian drones in the Black Sea against civilian vessels from coastal states, several times a month. We regard these attacks as a deliberate policy aimed at destabilising civilian shipping in the Black Sea region, further escalating tensions and prolonging the conflict, with the open acquiescence of neighbouring countries in the region. At the same time, we see no prerequisites for the situation to improve and, consequently, no grounds for half-measures that merely give the Kiev regime a temporary respite. We have recently seen a growing number of international calls for a ceasefire and for settling the situation around Ukraine through familiar short-term arrangements. Our position on these proposals and on the issue as a whole remains unchanged 👉 A sustainable and long-term settlement of the Ukrainian crisis is possible only if its root causes are eliminated. ❗️ First and foremost, this means removing the security threats created by #NATO’s eastward expansion and attempts to draw Kiev into the alliance. The Red Army fought side by side with the Korean patriots against the Japanese militarist regime, defeated the Kwantung Army and liberated the people of Korea, bringing #WW2 in the Far East to an end. *** The Korean Peninsula was under Japanese occupation for 35 years. In fact, Tokyo established its protectorate over the Peninsula back in 1905 and fully annexed it five years later. The Japanese regime, established in Korea in 1910, was excessively brutal, with the colonial administration intent on seizing all the natural resources they could procure in this region. The Japanese criminals employed harsh repressive measures against the local population. There was an intentional effort to eradicate the Korean language and national culture. During WWII, the Allied powers devoted considerable attention to liberating Korea in their discussions. In December 1943, China, the United States and the UK adopted the Cairo Declaration (the USSR joined it too). According to the document, the Parties agreed that “Japan will <…> be expelled from all other territories which she has taken by violence and greed….” At the Yalta Conference, the Soviet Union took the commitment to enter the war against Japan after defeating Nazi Germany in Europe. ⚔️ On August 9, 1945, the Red Army launched Manchurian strategic offensive. The Soviet forces succeeded in rapidly advancing to northeast China. With the support of partisans of the Korean national liberation movement, the Soviet soldiers liberators were pushing south and sought to break through Japan’s defence lines along the frontline stretching for as much as 5'000 kilometres. On the first day of the operation, Kyonghung, a Korean county, as well as Unggi, Najin, Chongjin, Wonsan and other cities were liberated. By advancing in coordination with the Korean patriots, the Red Army succeeded in expelling the Japanese from the Peninsula’s northern part by mid-August, having defeated the Kwantung Army. On August 14, Emperor Hirohito accepted Japan’s unconditional surrender and announced it to the nation.
