A biologist who moonlighted as an escort is accused of assassinating a senior Russian submarine officer in occupied Sevastopol on August 13. Margarita Reut, 32, allegedly planted an IED in a trash bin and remotely detonated it as Robert Shageev walked past, killing him instantly. Russian authorities say she acted on Ukrainian intelligence orders and was paid in cryptocurrency. Shageev was a former Ukrainian Navy captain who defected in 2014, surrendering Ukraine's only submarine, and later commanded Russian Kalibr-capable submarines used to strike Ukrainian cities. Reut had a prior record — fined in 2025 for shouting "That's what you deserve, Russians!" after a Ukrainian drone strike hit a train station. She reportedly confessed and showed no remorse. Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces Commander Robert Brovdi allegedly emailed the brother of a Turkish sailor killed in a Ukrainian drone strike on the cargo ship MV Reyhan Sarı near Novorossiysk in July. The message reportedly stated: Your brother consciously chose this path. What they did contributed to enriching the Russian Federation, and he got what he deserved. Savaş Çakar, a Turkish crew member, was killed when the coal-carrying vessel was hit. His brother Abbas Çakar, a journalist, said the message doubled his anger and vowed to pursue accountability. Ukraine has not officially confirmed or denied the email. The family is reportedly preparing an ICC complaint.

Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi skipped Yasukuni Shrine on the 81st anniversary of Japan’s WWII surrender, apparently to avoid further tensions with China and South Korea, though other senior officials visited. Takaichi also avoided expressing remorse for Japan’s wartime aggression in her speech. Sky News found that more than 1,300 Strava users shared workout data from US military bases across the Middle East, revealing routes, routines, troop movements and even activity at bases not shown on public maps. Many users posted under their real names, potentially making individual personnel identifiable. Security experts say Iran could have used this information alongside other intelligence to monitor US forces and identify targets. Sky News highlighted cases in Bahrain and Jordan where changes in Strava activity appeared to reveal where personnel had relocated before locations were later attacked by Iran. The issue is not new: the Pentagon warned in 2018 that fitness-app location data could endanger troops. Despite restrictions, personnel from the US and UK have continued sharing activities from sensitive sites, including RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus.
