Use of ਨੇ (ne) in Punjabi: ਨੇ (ne) is one of the most important Punjabi grammar markers, and it often confuses beginners because English doesn't have an exact equivalent. What does ਨੇ (ne) mean? ਨੇ is not translated directly into English. It is a marker placed after the person who performed an action in many past-tense sentences. Think of it like this: Subject + ਨੇ + Object + Verb Examples ਰਾਮ ਨੇ ਰੋਟੀ ਖਾਧੀ। Ram ne roti khaadhi. Ram ate the food. Here: ਰਾਮ = Ram ਨੇ = subject marker ਰੋਟੀ = food ਖਾਧੀ = ate ਮੈਂ ਨੇ ❌ (Wrong) With the pronouns "I", "you" etc., ਨੇ is not used. Natural way to say: ਮੈਂ ਰੋਟੀ ਖਾਧੀ। (No ਨੇ in modern standard speech.) He = ਉਸ ਨੇ She = ਉਸ ਨੇ They = ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ We = ਅਸੀਂ (without ਨੇ in modern usage) You = ਤੁਸੀਂ (without ਨੇ in modern usage) Examples: ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੀ। He/She read the book. ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। They did the work. When do we use ਨੇ? Generally, ਨੇ is used: Mostly in the past tense. Especially when someone did something to something else (a completed action). Examples: ਸੀਤਾ ਨੇ ਚਾਹ ਬਣਾਈ। Sita made tea. ਮੋਹਨ ਨੇ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਿਆ। Mohan opened the door. When do we NOT use ਨੇ? Usually not in present or future tense. ਰਾਮ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। Ram eats. ਰਾਮ ਖਾਏਗਾ। Ram will eat. (No ਨੇ here.) Easy rule for beginners Whenever you see: Someone + ਨੇ + did something think "ਨੇ marks the doer of a completed action." Examples: ਮਾਂ ਨੇ ਰੋਟੀ ਬਣਾਈ। → Mother made roti. ਪਿਤਾ ਨੇ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾਈ। → Father drove the car. ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਖੇਡ ਖੇਡੀ। → The children played a game. Don't try to translate ਨੇ into English.
