It was narrated on the authority of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān رضي الله عنه that he said: “There will surely come a people at the end of time who will recite the Qur’an, setting it upright just as an arrow is set straight. They will not omit from it an alif nor a wāw,yet their faith will not go beyond their throats.” Kitāb al-Īman, Imām Ahmad 169
Al-Ahqaf (46)
Imām al-Awzā'ī rahimahullah said: Three things are innovations: “To say – ‘I'm a believer that has completed the Iman’ and to say – ‘I'm truly a believer’ and to say – ‘I'm considered a believer in Allah's sight.’” ash-Shari'ah of al-Ajurri 1/376
Abū Bakr al-Marwadhī said: I asked Abū ʿAbdullāh (Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal), and I said: “What if a man says: ‘I am a Mu’min (believer)'?” He said: “He should say: 'I am a Mu’min, if Allah wills (in shāʾ Allāh)'.” I asked: “Should he say: 'I am a Mu’min before Allah'?” He replied: “No, but he should say: 'I am a Mu’min, if Allah wills'.” I asked: “Is there a difference between a man saying: 'I am a Mu’min' and saying: 'I am a Mu’min, if Allah wills'?” He said: “Yes, 'I am a Mu’min, if Allah wills' excludes certainty — meaning he hopes (for faith) but does not know what he will end with.” Sufyān al-Thawrī said: He says: 'I am a Mu’min, if Allah wills,' and does not say: 'I am a Mu’min before Allah.' Mālik ibn Anas said: “I do not say: 'I am a Mu’min,' nor do I say: 'I am not a Mu’min.'” Sharḥ Uṣūl Iʿtiqād Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamā‘ah by Imām al-Lālakāʾī (Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Lālakāʾī, d. 418 AH),1607

Abu'l-Jalad Al-Basri said: “I seek refuge with Allah from a time in which even the elderly have prolonged hopes, and the youth become rebellious. A time in which those who are free are made slaves, and a time in which people long for worldly desires and have no fear of Allah. Their prayers shall not be answered, their hearts will be like the hearts of wolves and they won't show mercy to one another.” Imam Ahmad, az-Zuhd 2/183
Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (d. 110) said: “A believer is not seen except that he is criticising himself; ‘What was my intention with my words? What was my intention with my eating? What was my intention with my drinking?’ And the heedless go forth without admonishing themselves.” Muḥāsabah al-Nafs li Ibn Abī al-Dunyā, pg. 31–32

Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: “Faith (īmān) is not by adornment (or outward display) nor by wishful thinking. Rather, it is what settles firmly in the heart and is confirmed by deeds.” Ibn Battah in Al-Ibanah Al-Kubra Vol. 3 pg. 20

Yunus bin Suleiman, who was with Omar bin Harun said: “I looked at the knowledge, and I saw the Qur’an and the narrations. Then I looked at the narrations, – and I saw the greatness of the Lord, – the description of Paradise – and Hell, – what is permissible – and what is forbidden, – commands and prohibitions, – and upholding ties of kinship among the types of goodness. Then I looked at the opinion/analogy, and it was – deception, – misleading, – betrayal, – tricks, – hardness of heart, and many evil things. So I took the Athar and abandoned the opinion/analogy.” Narrated by Al-Harawi in Dham Al Kalam
“Indeed, the person who is most protective of himself is the one who guards his tongue the most, who is most concerned with improving his religion, and who is most distant from things that do not concern him.” Ibn Baṭṭah al-ʿUkbarī, al-Ibānah al-Kubrá 2/596

Imām Hasan al-Basrī said: “By Allāh there is not a believer that starts the morning upon the earth, and there is not a believer that starts the night upon it, except that he is afraid of Nifāq upon himself, and no one feels safe from Nifāq except for a Munāfiq.” as-Sunnah of Khallāl 1/1637
Tābiʿī Imām Rabīʿ ibn Khuthaym said: “There is not a hidden [thing] that waits for a believer, better than death.” az-Zuhd of Wakī’ Bin Jarrāh 1/313

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ said, “On every Friday the angels take their stand at every gate of the masjid to write the names of the people chronologically (i.e. according to the time of their arrival for the Friday prayer) and when the Imam sits (on the pulpit) they fold up their scrolls and get ready to listen to the sermon.” Sahih al-Bukhari 3211
