🇺🇸 USS Benfold (DDG-65), a US Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, was left dead in the water for four days in the South China Sea last month after its generators failed and knocked out all power. USNI News confirmed the breakdown happened on July 24 during routine operations, with 7th Fleet spokesperson Cmdr. Matthew Comer saying no crew were hurt. With no power, the crew had no working kitchen, toilets, air conditioning, or clean water for days. The nearby George Washington Carrier Strike Group had to step in and help, with the cruiser USS Robert Smalls supplying meals to Benfold's stranded crew. The destroyer finally reached Subic Bay in the Philippines on July 28, where Navy repair crews met it and moved sailors into shore lodging the next day. Power wasn't back on until July 30, six days after it first went out. Repairs wrapped up by August 7, and the ship left port on August 8, later arriving in Yokosuka, Japan. Notably, Benfold didn't sail through the Malacca Strait with the rest of its strike group, which appears to be heading toward the Middle East. The Navy says it's still investigating what caused the failure.

One source told Reuters that Tehran has offered similar arrangements to at least two other Gulf states. Following the report, the UAE foreign ministry officially denied the transfer, stating that claims about unfreezing and transferring Iranian assets, including the $3 billion figure, are "entirely false and unfounded."

Maritime shipping security expert Moritz Brake told Bild that Germany should take the Russian president's warning seriously. According to the German Insurance Association, a Russian response could prove costly for European trade and shipping companies, with insurers likely to tighten coverage terms and rerouted shipments driving up delivery times and costs. The Association of German Shipowners has also voiced concern. Putin had earlier said that authorities in some Western countries had floated the idea of seizing Russian vessels and selling off the seized property. He called this piracy and stated that Moscow would respond in kind, adding that Russia would choose the time and place of its response, including potentially in the Pacific Fleet's area of responsibility, and that the defense ministry had already been instructed accordingly.

🇷🇺⚔️🏁 The war in Ukraine has handed Russia a significant advantage in any future confrontation with NATO in the Baltic region, making it far harder for the alliance to move troops by land or sea, the International Institute for Strategic Studies writes. According to the institute's analysts, Russia would not need to physically seize the Suwalki corridor in a war scenario to seriously restrict its use. Keeping the route under constant attack would be enough. The corridor, roughly 65 kilometers wide, runs between Kaliningrad region and Belarus, and Russian fiber optic first person view drones are already capable of operating at ranges of about 40 kilometers while resisting electronic jamming. Combined with missile and drone strikes, mining, sabotage, and attacks on roads and railways, this could sharply cut the corridor's throughput and force NATO to burn through air defense, counter-drone, and engineering resources just to keep it functioning. The same logic applies at sea. Russia would not need to fully close Baltic shipping lanes, since a handful of successful strikes, the threat of mines, or the ability to continuously track vessels could be enough to slow convoys and force NATO to divert forces to escort them. About 56 percent of Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian territory lies within 100 kilometers of Russia or Belarus. Based on Ukraine's experience, the zone of dense reconnaissance and drone strikes can reach 30 to 40 kilometers, while some long range systems can strike beyond 100 kilometers. The institute concludes that in a conflict, NATO would have to abandon any expectation of permanent freedom of movement and instead rely on creating temporary windows for convoys crossing the Baltic and troop transfers through Suwalki, drawing on small ports, backup routes, and dispersed logistics.

According to the NYT, European countries want the United States to reopen channels with Russia on Ukraine, driven by fears of new strikes as the cold season approaches. At the same time, France, Germany, and Britain are pushing to be included in any future negotiations, worried that Washington and Moscow could reach an agreement without European input. Europeans accept that the United States will take the lead role in any talks with Russia. The common European position is currently being shaped mainly by France and Germany, while Britain is treading more carefully, wary of straining relations with the Trump administration.
