ON THE PATH OF ʿILM: ATTENDANCE AND DEDICATION In a recent interview, Dr Hamza al-Bakri shared how he missed only one and a half lessons over an eight-year period of study with his teacher, Shaykh Muhammad Awwama. One because of travel and half a lesson because his child was hospitalised. This is what it means to have the right adab in seeking knowledge and to truly appreciate the teacher, the lesson, the book, and the knowledge being imparted. There is no fast-track method of attaining sacred ʿilm; rather, the journey is slow and steady, and it takes patience and dedication. This is how scholars became scholars. As for attending here and there, whenever convenient, or skipping class because your auntie is in town, or because your ankle hurts, or because your cat died, then it shows one’s priorities are not in order. Sacrifice is part of the struggle. May Allah Most High grant us tawfiq, amin!

“Taqwā (God-consciousness) cannot truly be realized except through knowledge.” — Abu al-Mahasin al-Qawqaji al-Hanafi (d. 1305 AH) Meaning: True taqwā—being mindful of Allah and avoiding sin—can only be properly achieved when a person has knowledge of what Allah has commanded and prohibited. Without knowledge, a person may intend piety but not know the correct way to practice it.

By now, most American Muslims have heard of the Fatwa allowing Zakat to political PACs issued by FCNA/AMJA. Many traditional scholars from diverse backgrounds across the continent have been working hard to create a joint response condemning the Fatwa and rebutting it from multiple perspectives. The coalition of scholars includes prominent figures from all 4 madhabs, and various paths and opinions. This is also one of the biggest coalitions that have been made in recent years. Scholars of all 4 madhabs came together to write peer-reviewed responses invalidating the validity of the FCNA/AMJA Fatwa through the framework of their Madhabs and a joint statement representing all scholars from all 4 madhabs. Despite having profound differences, 40 (and growing) scholars and researchers have signed this response from across the country, out of concern for the rights of poor and needy Muslims who are at risk of having their God-given share of Zakat being redirected to those undeserving of it. This coalition was signed by Dr. Shadee Elmasry and all of Darul Fath’s respected faculty. Please read the responses here: https://purifyzakat.com A shortened summary of the main response is forthcoming, insha Allah.
HANAFI USUL – BETWEEN SAMARKAND & BUKHARA We were honoured to host guest sessions with Dr Issam Eido at the recent Hanafi intensive in New Jersey. Dr Issam explored the centrality of Hanafi usul within the wider fiqh tradition and proceeded to examine the points of convergence and divergence between the intellectual trajectories of Bukhara and Samarkand, as exemplified by Fakhr al-Islam al-Bazdawi and ʿAlaʾ al-Dīn al-Samarqandi. Tips On Reading Arabic Without Tashkil Yesterday, in a Nahw class that I teach on Al-Tuhfa Al-Saniyya, I got into a discussion with students on how to read Arabic without harakat faster. The discussion resonated with a lot of the students, and I think that struggling to read Arabic quickly and properly is a very common thing that students of knowledge struggle with. I wrote this guide compiling some insights on how to become better at reading quickly and accurately in Arabic. https://ummahspot.com/blogs/publications/tips-on-reading-arabic-without-tashkil
