𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝: 𝐓𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 🥄👭 | 𝐑𝐞𝐯 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧 Imagine you’re in a hospital and you see two men come in. One man is groaning in pain, dressed in tattered clothes that reveal deep gashes beneath. The other one is more well-dressed and altogether calm. When he comes in, he picks up a magazine and waits patiently to be called. Which man do you think needs help more urgently? Now, what if I told you that the second man had tightness in his chest and pain in his left arm, all classic signs of a heart attack? In other words, both men need help. The first man’s condition may be more obvious because you can see the problem, but you wouldn’t know about the second man’s just by looking at him. This was a true story from Ps Shannon’s experience as a nurse. But she also understood it as a parable for how different people perceive their spiritual need. This is the main point of today’s passage, where Jesus goes to dinner, only to be confronted by Pharisees who accuse him of fellowshipping with lowlife sinners. Here are the key takeaways: 1️⃣ The Pharisee’s Illusion At the time, the Pharisees were held up by the people as role models. How could they not be, when the Pharisees were so disciplined and so religious with their traditions? Even the Pharisees themselves believed they were fully righteous and free from sin! But in actuality, they were like the second man in our story; they may not have sinned as obviously as the tax collectors and prostitutes, but their sin was on the inside. As Jesus said elsewhere, they were filled with evil things like greed and envy. But unlike the second man, they refused to recognise their issue and instead looked down upon the “real” sinners. 2️⃣ The Sinner’s Opportunity Like the first man, the tax collectors and prostitutes’ issue was glaringly obvious. Perhaps that turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because it allowed a tax collector like Matthew/Levi to see his own brokenness. And yet, he didn't see his situation as hopeless. Rather, he chose to repent and seek help from the one Man who could save him. 3️⃣ The Prescription for All Ps Shannon was not the first to compare spiritual need with sickness. In fact, in this very passage, Jesus himself describes sin as a sickness and himself as the Doctor. Whether you are an obvious sinner like the tax collectors or a closet one like the Pharisees, Jesus is the only cure. By his death and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for our sins, he is freeing us from the power of sin, and he will one day rescue us from the presence of sin. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁: At the end of the day, the question is not whether we are sinners; the Bible declares that everyone is, without exception. No, the question is, what are we trusting to make us right with God? Do we trust our good deeds like the Pharisees do? Or can we be like the tax collectors and see that we have no cure apart from Jesus?
