🎉 Congratulations on UNC-Chapel Hill! Our student from Kazakhstan has been admitted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Although she received an offer from UNC, she ultimately chose to continue her studies elsewhere. She joined Freshman through the Admissions and Scholars programs after learning about the opportunity from a friend. The program gave her a clearer understanding of the U.S. admissions process and helped her become more confident expressing her ideas. 📚 Valera, Malika, Sega, and Sanjar supported her with her personal statement, essays, and overall application. Their meetings gave her a space to reflect honestly on her experiences and find the right way to present her story. Rustam’s seminars introduced her to philosophy and encouraged her to question ideas she had previously taken for granted. Dr. Lyusyena also guided her through a research project and provided both academic and personal support throughout the process. 🌱 During high school, she explored projects related to technology, health, social impact, and accessibility. She hopes to use her undergraduate education to work on research, startups, or technical tools that improve people’s lives, particularly the lives of people with disabilities. Reflecting on her journey with Freshman, she said: “Freshman helped me think more carefully about why I believe what I believe and taught me how to communicate complex ideas more clearly. The mentors made our meetings feel like a safe space, which allowed me to be honest about my experiences and find the right way to tell my story. I am very grateful for the academic guidance, encouragement, and support I received throughout the process.” 💙 We congratulate her on her admission to UNC Chapel Hill and wish her the very best as she begins her undergraduate studies abroad. @freshmanblog

✨ Getting Into Bowdoin: How One Decision Can Completely Change Your Application In the recent interview, together with Alpamis Makhmutov, we explored how to build extracurriculars that genuinely reflect your personality, values, and long-term goals. This week, we continue the conversation with Abrorbek Samijonov, an incoming student at Bowdoin College who received a $388,000 scholarship and was also admitted to Carnegie Mellon University Qatar and the University of Toronto. In Episode XII of the Freshman Getting In series, we'll discuss how one bold decision—leaving a Presidential School to become a FLEX alumnus—completely transformed Abrorbek's trajectory and became a defining part of his application. We'll also explore how he built ScholarConnect, attended the Babson Summer Study program, approached liberal arts colleges, and crafted an application that reflected both his academic interests and long-term vision. Join us for an inside look at the decisions, experiences, and mindset that helped Abrorbek earn admission to some of the world's most selective universities. 📅 Friday, August 14th, 7PM (UTC +5) 📲 Get the event link via @FreshmanAcademy_Bot Freshman Alumni Network members will receive a separate link via the official Alumni Channel. @freshmanblog

🎉 Welcome to Vanderbilt University, Ulnur! Ulnur, a student from Kazakhstan, has been admitted to Vanderbilt University on a full-ride scholarship to study Environmental Engineering. After joining Freshman’s Full Support Program in 2025, she gained a clearer understanding of the U.S. college admissions process and learned how to approach each part of the application more thoughtfully and strategically. 📚 Valera encouraged Ulnur to think beyond the application itself. Reading In Defense of a Liberal Education and writing reflections helped her become more intellectually curious, consider experiences from different perspectives, and communicate her ideas more effectively. Under Dr. Lyusyena’s supervision, she wrote a research paper on Central Asian water management systems. Sega and Rustam also provided thoughtful feedback on her essays, strengthening her analytical thinking, writing skills, and ability to approach complex questions with curiosity and an open mind. 🌱 Through studying Environmental Engineering, she hopes to contribute to developing engineering solutions that promote sustainable resource management and environmental protection. Reflecting on her experience with Freshman, Ulnur said: “What I appreciate most about Freshman is its emphasis on independent thinking and active engagement in the learning process. The program gave me a much clearer understanding of U.S. college admissions, but it also helped me become more intellectually curious and communicate my ideas more effectively. I am grateful to Valera and the entire Freshman team for their guidance and for creating an environment that encouraged me to grow. My advice to future applicants is to start early, stay curious, and trust your own journey.” 💙 We congratulate Ulnur on this incredible achievement and wish her the best of luck at Vanderbilt University. @freshmanblog
