Ibn Qayyim رحمه الله said: "Come forth to enter upon Allah and to reside near to Him in the abode of peace, without hardship, fatigue, or trouble, but rather by taking the shortest and simplest of paths. You are in a moment between two moments, which in reality is your lifetime, it is your present moment between the past and the future: What has passed, you can repair with repentance, remorse, and seeking forgiveness, and this requires no physical labor or hardship, nor the struggle of arduous work. It is, rather, only an act of the heart. And for what is to come, you abstain from sins. Your abstaining is simply withholding and resting; it is not an action with limbs whose endurance requires hardship, but rather it is to have a firm resolution and intention that brings ease to your body, heart, and inner-self. So, what has passed, you rectify with repentance, and what is to come, you rectify with abstinence, resolution, and intention. There is no physical hardship or fatigue in these two matters. But the real issue concerns your life, which is the time between those two periods; if you waste it, you lose your happiness and salvation, and if you preserve it, along with rectifying the times before and after it as mentioned, you achieve salvation and gain rest, pleasure, and bliss. Preserving it is more difficult than rectifying what is before and after it; as preserving it means committing yourself to what is most appropriate and beneficial for it and what most effectively procures its happiness. In this, people vary greatly. It is, by Allah, your current days in which you gather provisions for your hereafter; either to Paradise or to Hell. If you take them as a path to your Lord, you will reach the ultimate happiness and the greatest success in this brief period, which is insignificant compared to eternity. But if you prefer desires, comforts, frivolities, and play, they will swiftly pass away from you and result in enduring great pain, which is more difficult, harder, and longer-lasting than the struggle of patience in abstaining from Allah's prohibitions, being patient in His obedience, and opposing desires for His sake." Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen said: Sickness of the heart; (and protection is sought from Allah) it brings about corruption in one’s worldly life and after life. If the heart becomes sick with doubt, polytheism, hypocrisy or a dislike for what Allah has revealed, or hatred towards Allah’s allies, or with anything that is similar to that, then indeed (as a result of that) his worldly life and after life will end up in ruin. Therefore, it is binding upon you whenever you ask for well-being to bring to mind that you’re asking (for both) well-being against illness of the heart as well as illness of the body. Sharh Ar-Riyaadhus Saaliheen Volume 6 Page 21 Translated by Abu Arwa Ali bin Mushtaq Mir
