Didgori 1121 – August 12th Today marks the anniversary of the Georgian Crusade against the Turkish Islamic horde — the Battle of Didgori. A day when, under the command of King David the Builder, known as the “Sword of the Messiah,” the Georgian Crusaders defeated a vastly larger enemy and saved Western Christian civilization. With this victory, Georgia emerged as the most powerful force in the region for decades to come. It is also worth noting that up to 500 Frankish knights fought alongside our ancestors. Today, we remember the Heroes of Shindisi 🇬🇪 On August 11, 2008, near the railway station in Shindisi, an engineering platoon of the 2nd Infantry Brigade of the Georgian Armed Forces faced an unequal battle against a Russian motorized rifle company. Despite being heavily outnumbered and lightly armed, the Georgian soldiers fought for one hour and twenty minutes, inflicting significant losses on the enemy. The battle ended only after they ran out of ammunition. Among the last two soldiers surrounded were Senior Sergeant Aleksandre Oniani and his godson, Corporal Roman Zoidze, who was wounded and losing blood. Oniani refused to leave him. He recited the prayer - “Our Father” and, facing the threat of capture, sacrificed himself with a hand grenade. Seventeen Georgian soldiers lost their lives in the battle. 🇬🇪 Today, we remember Giorgi Antsukhelidze, a National Hero of Georgia and a true knight who fought against Russian aggression in 2008. During the 2008 war, Giorgi was captured by Russian forces and subjected to brutal torture. His captors ordered him to step on the Georgian national flag and insult the President of Georgia. He refused. He chose to lose his life rather than surrender his dignity. He refused to comply with the enemy’s demands and was tortured and killed by Russian forces and separatists. Eighteen years ago today, Russian forces launched an unprovoked invasion of Georgia, igniting the August War—a brutal conflict that lasted several days but left a lasting scar. Hundreds of Georgian soldiers and civilians paid the ultimate price, and our lands—particularly the Tskhinvali region—fell under temporary Russian occupation. We will never forget the aggression, the pain, or the sacrifice. Our memory is strong, our resolve unshaken. Justice will be served—sooner or later. Glory to our fallen heroes. Together they visited the match of our national teams, visited the sights of Tbilisi and simply had a great time. On October 28, the prominent Georgian anti-Bolshevik writer and thinker Grigol Robakidze was born. Robakidze left an indelible mark on Georgian literature and culture. In 1917, he took part in founding the Writers’ Union. After the Red Russia’s annexation of Georgia in 1921, Grigol Robakidze became involved in the national liberation movement, for which he was later persecuted by the Bolshevik regime. The works of the “fascist” writer were banned in the Soviet Union. Robakidze enjoyed great respect among Georgian émigrés, and no national issue escaped his attention. He made a significant contribution to the strengthening of Georgian-German relations. During the war, Grigol Robakidze showed deep care for Georgian legionnaires of the Wehrmacht and took an active part in their lives.
