  • 🍁 Why is eyewitness testimony not always reliable?   ✍🏻 Julia Wood & Ann Schweitzer:   Ronnie Bullock was serving a sixty-year sentence for kidnapping and raping a woman when DNA tests revealed that he could not have committed the crime. Like a number of other prisoners, Bullock was convicted largely on the basis of eyewitness testimony. “That’s the man; I’ll never forget his face” tends to be highly convincing to jurors. The problem is that eyewitness testimony isn’t always accurate.   Based on extensive studies, Brian Cutler and Steven Penrod (1995) estimate that eyewitness testimony may have led to the conviction and imprisonment of more than 4,500 innocent people. Why is eyewitness testimony not always reliable? One reason is that witnesses’ perceptions are shaped by the language lawyers use. In one experiment, viewers were shown a film of a traffic accident and then were asked, “How fast were the cars going when they smashed into each other?” Other viewers were asked how fast the cars were going when they  “bumped” or “collided.” Viewers testified to significantly different speeds depending on which word was used.   Lawyers’ language can also influence jurors’ perceptions (Feigenson, 2000). In a separate experiment (Trotter, 1975), viewers were shown a film of a traffic accident, after which they filled out a questionnaire that included questions about things that had not actually been in the film. Viewers who were asked, “Did you see the broken headlight?” more frequently testified that they had seen it than did viewers who were asked, “Did you see a broken headlight?” Roy Malpass, a psychologist at the University of Texas, notes another reason for inaccurate eyewitness testimony: selective perception. Research shows that witnesses focus selectively on weapons, a phenomenon that scholars call “weapon focus.” When perception is riveted on a weapon, it’s not focused on the person holding the weapon. Thus, recall of that person’s appearance may be flawed. (Wood & Schweitzer, 2017: 190; emphases added)   📚 Wood, Julia & Schweitzer, Ann. (2017). • 🍁 Labels Shape Perceptions   ✍🏻  Julia Wood & Ann Schweitzer:    When we label someone, we focus attention on particular aspects of a person and that person’s activities, and we necessarily obscure other aspects of who that person is. We might define a person as an environmentalist, a teacher, a gourmet cook, or a father. Each definition directs our attention to certain aspects of the person. We might talk with the environmentalist about wilderness legislation, discuss class assignments with the teacher, swap recipes with the chef, and exchange stories about children with the father. If we define someone as an Asian, a Buddhist, or a Canadian, then that may be all we notice about that person, although there are many other aspects. We tend to perceive and interact with people according to how we define them. Our language reflects our subjective perceptions, and at the same time, it shapes and fixes our perceptions. If you saw a person eat a very large meal, how would you describe what you saw? If the person was a teenaged boy, you might describe him as being a growing boy. If the person was a slender woman, you might describe her as having a healthy appetite. If the person was overweight, you might describe him as a glutton. Notice that the amount of food and the act of eating don’t change, but our perceptions and labels do. The labels we apply to people and things shape how we evaluate and respond to them. According to Joel Best (1989), the impact of labels is especially evident in language about AIDS. Calling it a “moral problem” defines people with the disease as having behaved badly and suggests the solution is to change behaviour. By contrast, calling AIDS a “medical problem” defines people with the disease as having certain biological processes that are not the fault of individuals. Consequently, the solution to AIDS as a “medical problem” lies in medical treatment. (Wood & Schweitzer, 2017: 136)   📚 Wood, Julia & Schweitzer, Ann. (2017). • 🍁 The effectiveness of persuasive communications ✍🏻 Elliot Aronson et al: The effectiveness of persuasive communications depends on who says what to whom. Who: The Source of the Communication •Credible speakers (e.g., those with obvious expertise) persuade people more than speakers lacking in credibility (Hovland & Weiss, 1951; Schwarz, Newman, & Leach, 2016). • Attractive speakers (whether due to physical or personality attributes) persuade people more than unattractive speakers do (Eagly & Chaiken, 1975; Khan & Sutcliffe, 2014). • People sometimes remember a message longer than they do information about the message source. In this manner, information from a low-credibility source sometimes becomes more persuasive with the passage of time, a phenomenon referred to as the sleeper effect (Kumkale & Albarracín, 2004; Albarracín, Kumkale, & Poyner-Del Vento, 2017). What: The Nature of the Communication People are more persuaded by messages that do not seem to be designed to influence them (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986; Walster & Festinger, 1962). • It is generally better to present a two-sided communication (one that presents arguments for and against your position) than a one-sided communication (one that presents only arguments favoring your position), especially when you are sure to refute the arguments on the other side of the issue (Cornelis, Cauberghe, & De Pelesmacker, 2014; Igou & Bless, 2003). • In terms of order effects, if speeches are to be given back to back and there will be a delay before people have to make up their minds, there tends to be a primacy effect: the first speech is usually more persuasive. However, if there is a delay between the speeches and people will make up their minds right after the second one, there is likely to be a recency effect: it is then better to give the last speech (Haugtvedt & Wegener, 1994; Miller & Campbell, 1959). To Whom: The Nature of the Audience An audience that is distracted during the persuasive communication will often be persuaded more than one that is not distracted (Albarracín & Wyer, 2001; Festinger & Maccoby, 1964). • Some individual differences predict a greater likelihood of persuadability, including having lower intelligence, being of moderate (versus high or low) self-esteem, and being between the impressionable ages of 18-25 (Krosnick & Alwin, 1989; Rhodes & Wood, 1992; Sears, 1981). • Cultural differences have also been found for which argument types are most persuasive. For American or other “Western” audiences, personal preferences are often central to effective messages, such as an advertisement that emphasizes, “I like it because it makes me feel good.” In other cultures that prioritize contextually appropriate behavior, an advertisement might be more effective by emphasizing the message, “I like it because others I am connected to like it” (Riemer et al., 2014)(Aronson et al, 2021: 216).

  • 🍁 Dehumanizing The Enemy: Justifying Cruelty ✍🏻 Elliot Aronson et al: A sad, though universal, phenomenon is that all cultures are inclined to dehumanize their enemies by calling them cruel names and regarding them as “vermin,” “animals,” “brutes,” and other nonhuman creatures. During World War II, Americans referred to the German people as “krauts” and portrayed them as brutes; they called the Japanese people “Japs” and portrayed them as sneaky and diabolical; during the Vietnam War, American soldiers referred to the Vietnamese as “gooks”; after the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began, some Americans began referring to the enemy as “ragheads” because of the turbans or other headdresses that many Arabs and Muslims wear. The use of such language is a way of reducing dissonance: “I am a good person, but we are fighting and killing these other people; therefore, they must deserve whatever they get, because they aren’t fully human like us.” (Aronson et al, 2021: 182) 📚 Aronson, Elliot & Wilson, Timothy D. & Sommers, Samuel R. • 🍁 Why do we, like, hesitate when we, um, speak? For as long as we've had language, some people have tried to control it. And some of the most frequent targets of this communication regulation are the ums, ers, and likes that pepper our conversations. These linguistic fillers occur roughly 2 to 3 times per minute in natural speech. So are ums and uhs just a habit we can't break? Or is there more to them? • 🍁 Body Language outweighs Words   ✍🏻  Julia Wood & Ann Schweitzer:    In conversation, is your “default” hand position palm up or palm down? Professor Allan Pease gave an amusing and illuminating talk (Pease, 2013) showing that one’s opinion of a speaker is almost immediate. When making presentations, we can encourage listeners to see a trustworthy and approachable presenter by learning to use palm-up gestures.   If a doctor has to report an error in a medical treatment, the patient may be better served by a face-to-face meeting than by a simple telephone call. The nonverbal messages given when face to face help the listener understand the message. In a study (Hannawa, 2014), patients viewed videos of such message giving, where nonverbal cues were both present and not present, and then responded to a questionnaire. Being able to receive nonverbal cues helps the patient better understand an error and its consequences.   When we approach an important meeting such as a job interview, how we enter the room may be more important than what we say. Deborah Gruenfeld (2013) puts the importance of our words at 7 percent, and body language at 55 percent. She cites power and influence as results of the ways we use body language to appear authoritative and approachable. Women are more skilled at using body language that reflects lower status; when a woman uses body language that reflects power, she is more likely to be judged harshly than a man with the same credentials. Gruenfeld advises women in particular to balance authoritativeness and approachability in business settings, and to use voice, eye contact, and space occupied to present an image of strength and competence. 🍁 The Process of Human Perception   ✍🏻 Julia Wood & Ann Schweitzer:   Perception is the active process of creating meaning by selecting, organizing, and interpreting people, objects, events, situations, and other phenomena. Note that perception is an active process. We do not passively receive what is “out there” in the external world. Instead, we actively work to make sense of ourselves, others, and interactions. To do so, we select only certain things to notice, and then we organize and interpret what we have selectively noticed. What anything means to us depends on the aspects of it that we notice and on how we organize and interpret those aspects. Thus, perception is not a simple matter of recording external reality. Indeed, we invest a lot of energy in constructing the meanings of phenomena.   Perception consists of three processes: selecting, organizing, and interpreting (see Figure 3.1). These processes are continuous, so that they blend into one another. They are also interactive, so that each of them affects the other two. For example, what we select to perceive in a particular situation affects how we organize and interpret the situation. At the same time, how we organize and interpret a situation affects our subsequent choices of what to perceive in the situation.   Selection Stop for a moment and notice what is going on around you right now. Is there music in the background? Is the room warm or cold, messy or neat, large or small, light or dark? Is there laundry in the corner waiting to be washed? Can you smell anything—food being cooked, the stale odour of last night’s popcorn, traces of cologne? Can you hear muted sounds of activities outside? Now, think about what’s happening inside you: Are you sleepy, hungry, comfortable? Do you have a headache or an itch anywhere? On what kind of paper is your book printed? Is the type large, small, easy to read? How do you like the size of the book, the colours used, the design of the pages?   Probably you weren’t conscious of most of these phenomena when you began reading the chapter. Instead, you focused on understanding the material in the book. You narrowed your attention to what you defined as important, and you were unaware of other aspects of the book and your surroundings. This is typical of how we live our lives. We can’t attend to everything in our environment, because there is far too much going on in and around us, and we don’t view most of it as relevant to us in any given moment.   We choose to attend to certain stimuli based on a number of factors. First, some qualities of phenomena draw attention. For instance, we notice things that STAND OUT, because they are larger, more intense, or more unusual than other phenomena. So we’re more likely to hear a loud voice than a soft one and to notice someone in a bright shirt than someone in a drab one. In the photo on this page, your eyes are probably drawn to the figure wear in the white shirt, because it stands out from all the others. Change also compels attention, which is why we may take for granted all of the pleasant interactions with a friend and notice only the tense moments.
