Feminism It is truly unfortunate that we have reached a stage where a voice is only heard if it is Western, and then it is promoted until it becomes a global and Arab voice, calling for women’s rights, as if women were not already an essential pillar of their own societies. Rights that our Deen has guaranteed — indeed, the Deen has elevated the status of women and made them honored beings. However, these rights sometimes go through difficult periods because of the actions of certain groups within society. In reality, these are individual and group-specific actions that should not be attributed to our Deen, nor should they be generalized to an entire society. Because of the actions of this small, extreme group that tries to marginalize women and make them insignificant, the feminist movement entered, taking advantage of ignorance and confusion. Some women in society embraced it and adopted it as a slogan — knowingly or unknowingly — and then loudly declared: “Yes, I am a feminist.” We are not here to discuss the history of feminism at length, but rather to give a brief overview for those who do not know about it: Feminism is a movement that originated in the West. It was founded by some women demanding their basic rights in a society where women were marginalized and viewed only as beings who worked and struggled without dignity or rights. From this situation, the movement emerged, as they did not have a religion that preserved women’s dignity and granted them their basic rights. Then the movement gradually developed until it transformed into a call for absolute equality between men and women. The movement then declined further, beginning to call for: - preventing punishment for adultery, - decriminalizing abortion, - removing what is called discrimination against homosexuality, - abolishing male guardianship (wali) over women in marriage and education, - raising the minimum marriage age, and other matters beyond that. The movements that adopted these ideas also began to split at every stage due to the contradictions that followed, until they reached a stage where some sought to divide society into two, or even three groups, reject relationships with men, and even develop hostility toward them — which contributed to the emergence and spread of lesbianism. As Muslims, we do not need any meaningless Western movement to teach us our rights and responsibilities, how to build our societies, or how to respect our women. All we truly need is to apply what we already believe in.
