Jinka University Hosts a Consultative Workshop on Omo-Turkana Research Station Establishment. May 12, 2026 Jinka University has conducted a high-level consultative workshop to discuss on the establishment of Omo-Turkana Research Station in Omorate, Dasenech Woreda. The event brought together different government officials, academicians, researchers, and representatives from partner institutions. The workshop represents an important step toward strengthening scientific research and promoting sustainable development in the Omo-Turkana Basin which is an area that widely recognized for its global scientific significance and socioeconomic value. In the opening session of the workshop, Dr. Tesfaye Alemu, Vice President for Academic, Research, Technology Transfer and Community Services, emphasized that the gathering comes at a critical moment requiring “collective vision, informed dialogue, and coordinated action" to ensure effective monitoring and management of the basin. Participants included key federal institutions such as the Ministry of Water and Energy, the Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, the Environmental Protection Authority, the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute, and Ethiopian Electric Power. Their participation highlighted the national importance of the initiative. International partners also took part in the discussions, including the African Center for Aquatic Research and Education (ACARE), expressing their commitment to supporting capacity development and contributing to the implementation of proposed projects. The proposed research station, to be led by Jinka University, is envisioned as a center of excellence that will enhance research capacity, promote interdisciplinary and cross-border collaboration, and support evidence-based development initiatives across the basin. During the discussion sessions, participants noted that despite its global importance, the Omo-Turkana Basin continues to face challenges due to limited institutional presence and fragmented research efforts. The workshop therefore focused on building a shared vision, defining stakeholder roles and responsibilities, and strengthening partnerships to ensure coordinated action. Finally the participants also expressed their strong support for the initiative, and they emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration to ensure the successful establishment and operation of the research station. ጂንካ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የኦሞ-ቱርካና የምርምር ማዕከል ለማቋቋም የባለድርሻ አካላት የምክክር መድረክ አካሄደ። ግንቦት 4/2018ዓ.ም ጂንካ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በዳሰነች ወረዳ ኦሞራቴ ከተማ ሊቋቋም የታሰበውን የኦሞ-ቱርካና የምርምር ማዕከል በተመለከተ ከተለያዩ አለምአቀፍና ሀገርአቀፍ ባለድርሻ አካላት በተገኙበት የጋራ የምክክር መድረክ አካሂዷል። በምክክር መድረኩ በርካታ የመንግስት ተቋማት ተወካዮች፣ ተመራማሪዎች እና የተለያዩ ዓለምአቀፍ አጋር ተቋማት የተገኙ ሲሆን በኦሞ-ቱርካና ማዕቀፍ ውስጥ የምርምር አቅምን ለማጠናከር እና ዘላቂ ልማትን ለማስፋፋት ያለመ የምክክር መድረክ መሆኑንም የዩኒቨርሲቲው የአካዳሚክ ምርምር ቴክኖሎጂ ሽግግርና ማህበረሰብ አገልግሎት ም/ፕሬዚዳንት ዶ/ር ተስፋዬ አለሙ በመክፈቻ ንግግራቸው ገልፀዋል። በመድረኩ ከፌዴራል ተቋማት የውሃና ኢነርጂ ሚኒስቴር፣ የግብርና ሚኒስቴር፣ የኢትዮጵያ የግብርና ምርምር ኢንስቲትዩት፣ የአካባቢ ጥበቃ ባለስልጣን፣ የብዝሃ ሕይወት ኢንስቲትዩት እና የኢትዮጵያ ኤሌክትሪክ ኃይል ተቋም ሃላፊዎች የተሳተፉ ሲሆን ከዓለም አቀፍ አጋር ተቋማት ደግሞ የአፍሪካ የውሃ ምርምርና ትምህርት ማዕከል (ACARE) በአቅም ግንባታ እና በታቀደው ፕሮጀክት አፈፃፀም ዙሪያ ድጋፍ እንደሚያደርጉ ገልጸዋል። ተሳታፊዎቹ ለዚህ ፕሮጀክት መሳካት ያላቸውን ጠንካራ ድጋፍ ገልጸው የምርምር ማዕከሉ በተሳካ ሁኔታ እንዲመሰረትና ለተግባራዊነቱ ቀጣይነት ያለው ትብብር እንደሚያደርጉ ቃል ገብተዋል።

የጂንካ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የሴኔት አባላት የተሻሻለውን የሴኔት ሌጅስሌሽንና በአዲስ መልክ የተዘጋጀውን የፕሮጀክት በጀት አስተዳደር መመሪያ አፀደቁ። ሚያዚያ 16/2018 ዓ/ም የጂንካ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የሴኔት አባላት የተሻሻለውን የሴኔት ሌጅስሌሽንና በአዲስ መልክ የተዘጋጀውን የፕሮጀክት በጀት አስተዳደር (Grant Budget Management) መመሪያ አፅድቀዋል። የሴኔት ሌጅስሌሽኑና የፕሮጀክት በጀት አስተዳደር መመሪያው በዋናነት የዩኒቨርሲቲውን የአካዳሚክ አስተዳደር ሂደት ለማጠናከር፣ የምርምርና የፕሮጀክት በጀቶችን በግልፅነትና በተገቢነት ለማስተዳደር እንዲሁም የተቋሙን አጠቃላይ አፈጻጸም ለማሻሻል ታሳቢ በማድረግ የተዘጋጁ መሆኑን የተገለፀ ሲሆን የዩኒቨርሲቲው ፕሬዚዳንት ዶ/ር ዮሐንስ ይትባረክ ዩኒቨርሲቲው ወደ ልየታ (Differentiation) እያመራ እና የትኩረት መስኮችን መሠረት በማድረግ ተግባራትን እያከናወነ በመሆኑ በተለይም የተሻሻለው የሴኔት ሌጀስሌሽን ለዚህ ልየታ ሂደት ወሳኝ ሚና እንደሚኖረው ገልፀዋል። የሴኔት አባላቱ የተለያዩ ሀሳብና አስተያየቶች አንስተው የተሻሻለው የሴኔት ሌጅስሌሽኑና በፕሮጀክት በጀት አስተዳደር (Grant Budget Management) መመሪያውን በማፅደቅ ስብሰባው ተጠናቋል።

Jinka University Holds Annual Research Validation Workshop. 8th of April 2026 Jinka University conducted its Annual Research Validation Workshop to bring together academic staff, stakeholders from Ari and South Omo Zones, and researchers to present and validate their ongoing research projects. The workshop was began with a welcome speech by Dr. Tesfaye Alemu, Vice President for Academic, Research, Technology Transfer, and Community Service. Dr. Tesfaye emphasized the significance of research validation in enhancing academic quality and ensuring the relevance of research activities to community needs. The opening remark was delivered by Dr. Yohannes Yitbarek, President of the University who highlighted the vital role of research in institutional development and encouraged participants to actively engage in constructive discussions to improve the quality and impact of their work. The validation workshop provided a platform for scholarly exchange, strengthening research culture, and fostering collaboration among academic staff.
