📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣 South Africa GBVF Update Purple Hearts movement President Ramaphosa has now declared gender based violence a national crisis. This shows that campaigns like Women For Change are making real impact. But South Africa still has a long way to go. Activists want GBVF declared a national disaster so the government must release emergency resources but this request was rejected. Implementation, funding, and reforms are still weak. This is progress, not victory. Verified Facts :- South Africa GBVF Campaign 1. Ramaphosa Declares GBVF a National Crisis • President Cyril Ramaphosa officially declared gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) a national crisis. • The announcement was made during the G20 Social Summit in Ekurhuleni. • He called for “extraordinary and concerted action … using every means at our disposal” to address GBVF. • He emphasized that violence against women undermines social cohesion and constrains development. 2. Women For Change’s Demand: National Disaster Status • The campaign is demanding that GBVF be declared a national disaster, not just a crisis. • Their petition has over 1 million signatures. • “Disaster” status would unlock emergency mobilization of state resources. 3. Government Pushback • The National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) rejected the request, saying GBVF does not meet the legal definition of a disaster under the Disaster Management Act (DMA). • NDMC head Dr. Elias Sithole stated that while the crisis is recognized, the DMA was not intended to address deep-rooted social issues like GBVF. • Women For Change denounced this rejection as “insulting” given the scale of violence. 4. Funding & Policy Gaps • Although R21 billion was previously allocated for the GBVF National Strategic Plan, activists say implementation and funding remain weak. • Women For Change’s broader demands include: stricter sentencing, bail reforms, a public sex offenders register, and mandatory GBV education. Did the Campaign “Win”? • Partial Success: The crisis declaration is a symbolic win, giving political legitimacy to the scale of the problem. • Not Full Victory: “National disaster” status, which unlocks emergency powers and resources, has not been granted. • Ongoing Battle: The campaign still has a long way to go for resource allocation, legal reform, and transparency in funding. Strategic Takeaways • This is a powerful example of civil society advocacy: petitions, mass mobilization, and media use can push structural change. • The “crisis” declaration shows political traction, but does not guarantee funding or systemic reform. • Highlighting the crisis vs. disaster gap underscores the limits of legal frameworks versus social urgency. • This case demonstrates how international moments (like the G20 summit) can amplify national advocacy campaigns.

❤️❤️❤️❤️ Hey y’all, Proud to know and see most of y’all at the get-togethers over the years — this group has meant a lot to me, and I’m grateful for the journey we’ve shared. But after a lot of reflection, I’ve decided it’s time for me to step away. I haven’t felt safe or aligned with the direction things have taken. I also know I haven’t been as active as I wanted to be over the past couple of years. I’m choosing to move forward on my own — not out of bitterness, but out of respect for myself and for all of you. Thank you for the moments we shared, and I truly wish you all the best moving ahead. Take care.

To our beloved community, I want to take a moment to express my deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in the last 72-hour operation to secure the release of our sister. Thanks to your calls, your advocacy, your messages, your prayers, your urgency, your sleepless nights. she is now out and safely on her way home. This was not an easy battle. The emotional, legal, and security toll it took on all of us cannot be overstated. But what I witnessed over the last three days was the power of collective resistance, protective sisterhood, and radical solidarity in motion. Every person who stood by us whether publicly or behind the scenes played a role in making this happen. And I want you to know: it mattered. You mattered. We still have a long road ahead. But for this moment, let’s pause and honor what we were able to do together not just for one woman, but for the principle that no woman should face this system alone. From the bottom of my heart: Thank you. With love and resistance, Betelehem Akalework Setaset Power

Keneni Aduga, a 25 year old model and social media presence, had died on March 10, 2025 - after allegedly falling from the 5th floor apartment she cohabitates with her partner, musician Andualem Gossa. Keneni, known for her strong social media presence and beloved by many, tragically died under circumstances that raise profound alarm and demand urgent action. Andualem was initially detained as a suspect but was subsequently released due to "lack of evidence." Since then, information indicating patterns and history of abuse have come out on social media. We believe the circumstances surrounding Keneni's death, coupled with disturbing new information, necessitate a fresh and impartial inquiry. To this end, we demand a thorough, transparent, and INDEPENDENT reinvestigation into the suspicious death of Keneni Adugna. Sign this petition to demand truth, accountability, and systemic change for Keneni and for all women and girls in our society who deserve safety, dignity, and justice 👇🏾 https://chng.it/q4gcHPGfPF
