In memory of Peter Roman Scholl-Latour born: 9 March 1924 (Bochum) died: 16 August 2014 (Bad Honnef) Peter Roman Scholl-Latour was a German-French journalist, non-fiction writer, war correspondent and columnist. From 1978 onwards, through his connections with Sadegh Tabatabai, Scholl-Latour was in contact with Ayatollah Khomeini, who was living in exile in Neauphle-le-Château, near Paris. He travelled to Tehran with a film crew and subsequently showed Khomeini the footage they had shot there. As a result, he became one of the journalists who were granted the privilege of accompanying Khomeini on the aeroplane during his return to Iran. Scholl-Latour later reported on this: “Tabatabei said to me: ‘The Imam is now performing his morning prayer; if you like, you can film him whilst he does so.’ That was very unusual. And then something quite strange happened. He handed Tabatabei a large, yellow envelope, which Tabatabei passed on to me, saying: ‘If we are arrested or even killed on arrival in Tehran, then hide this envelope well. If all goes well, please give it back to me.’ When we arrived, two million people were cheering Khomeini’s arrival. So I handed the envelope back. It was not until eight months later that I found out what was inside: it was the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” According to his own account, Scholl-Latour subsequently always carried a photograph of himself and Khomeini with him, so that he could ‘identify’ himself in the Muslim world. On 16 August 2014, Scholl-Latour died in Rhöndorf at the age of 90 following a serious illness. In accordance with his wishes, he was buried at the Waldfriedhof cemetery in Rhöndorf.
