🍎 This is an apple strudel I’ve just cooked (with seasonal apples!). Do you know what we call this type of pastry? (Like croissants 🥐) Answer: puff pastry Like if you’d eat one ❤️ #lingua_lab_vocabulary
Look at my goosebumps and… Do you know the expression “go cold turkey”? 🍗 go cold turkey — to stop a habit or addictive substance completely and suddenly. I tried cutting down on coffee, but eventually I just went cold turkey. 🦃 What I found out recently is the theory of its origins. It links it to the cold, clammy skin and goosebumps people can experience during drug withdrawal, resembling the skin of a plucked turkey. A personal story in the comment section 🫶 #lingua_lab_etymology
Russian idiom: пресечь в зародыше In English, literally: отщипнуть бутон Try to translate and then check the comment section 🧚 Remember to like the post! It motivates me :) #lingua_lab_vocabulary

Pronunciation ⛰️ Recently I saw my British friend and told her about my trip to some Georgian canyons /ˈkæn.jənz/. She looked slightly surprised at first, but then things seemed to start making sense. ☀️ Thing is: at first, I accidentally said “Kenyans” /ˈken.jənz/ (citizens of Kenya). Like: we saw some Kenyans . Then I started saying “canyons” with /æ/, and things got clear 😁 🔊 Kenyans /ˈken.jənz/ vs canyons /ˈkæn.jənz/ Be careful 😄
Hey there! ✨ Fun fact: I’ve just found out that in Hindu they use 1 word for “tomorrow” and “yesterday”. I suppose it says something about our brain. A lot of my students confuse “yesterday” and “tomorrow” when speaking English. I sometimes do, too, both in English and Russian. Probably that’s because tomorrow and yesterday are one “step” away from today, and for our brain it mightn’t matter which way…🤔
Gotcha! Surprise-surprise, both are correct. Knock ON the door: the physical action of knocking on the door Knock AT the door: someone is there, at the door, and I hear them knocking. See the pics to grasp the difference 😊 P.S. I was shocked when I found out! I was watching The Handmaid's Tale and couldn't get my head around it. #lingua_lab_vocabulary

My students and I discuss all sorts of things in our classes, thus my chat GPT gets all sorts of questions. I’ll just leave it here. 😁 #lingua_lab_vocabulary

😤 Jealous and envious — any difference? ✨ Yes, there is, and it’s about the level of unhappiness you experience when you want something somebody else has. ❓Which word do you think clearly indicates you’re actually upset and angry? . . . Jealous. While envious is still not an equivalent to Russian “белая зависть”, it’s softer and more socially acceptable. I used to tell my students they were exact synonyms until recently, when I was chatting to my native English teacher and she said “I feel jealous… No, it’s not the right word. Envious, rather”. Naturally, I asked her to explain and that’s what we found out. Now I’m sharing it with you! ❤️ Like the post if you want more content like this ❤️ #lingua_lab_vocabulary
I've returned to share a VERY useful piece of language with you guys :) ✨ How to say "сделать что-то через жопу?" = to half-arse sth(🇬🇧) / to half-ass (🇺🇸) sth What was the last thing you half-arsed? I personally find half-arsing a skill I need to learn and use in some cases. Better done than perfect, eh? ❤️Like if useful! #lingua_lab_vocabulary
I just LOVE sea buckthorn tea. It reminds me of my dear granny — she always had a jar of these berries in her fridge (mixed with sugar to preserve them) ❤️ And you? #lingua_lab_vocabulary
Which of the myths did Aristotle disprove?
🎙️ This is me — riding an electric scooter around Tbilisi and listening to my favourite comedy historical podcast (You’re Dead to Me). And here a quiz from one of the episodes (Aristotle): 🤔 Here are five myths that were believed in the ancient world. Aristotle believed four of them. Which of them did he disprove? Answer below ⏬
The plural for "crisis" is...

🎢 Recently I was telling my dear Sasha (my friend and teacher 🇬🇧) about my stunning quad bike experience. It was raining and at some point we were riding through a cloud, where you could see things no further than 2 metres away. Another problem was the glasses — they… запотели 🤔 🥸 2 possible options: The glasses steamed up / fogged up. #lingua_lab_vocabulary
