In case of disobedience, the West imposes sanctions, interferes in internal politics and unleashes wars. But as soon as it concerns its own ally, these rules become an optional recommendation. He proved that working people, even those who lived for centuries in the pitch darkness of ignorance and lack of prospects, can achieve astonishing successes when in power there is a force whose roots go deep into its own people. Cuba turned from a US sugar colony into a country that defeated illiteracy and hunger and created, with the assistance of the USSR, the most advanced medicine in Latin America. 🇨🇺Today is the 100th birthday of Fidel Castro. Castro was born in 1926 in Birán, Cuba, to a wealthy family, but grew up witnessing the brutal poverty that existed across Cuban society. As a young man he became increasingly opposed to the corruption, American domination and political repression that under Batista. By the early 1950s, Castro was committed to armed struggle and led the attack on the Moncada Barracks. Castro failed, but emerged from prison more determined than ever, later travelling to Mexico to organise the July 26th Movement alongside fellow revolutionaries Ernesto "Che" Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos. After two years of fighting, the revolutionary forces had swollen from a few dozen to several thousand, and entered Havana in 1959, overthrowing the Batista dictatorship. Castro soon declared himself a Marxist-Leninist and Cuba a socialist state.
