The discrepancies here are glaring. First, who gave you this particular Qur’an? Who translated it, and who published it? Those details matter enormously when someone is presenting a footnote as though it were the actual wording of the Qur’ān. Secondly, simply looking at the peculiar rendering of jihād as “holy fighting” should immediately raise questions about the translation and its methodology. Jihād does not linguistically mean “holy fighting”, nor is “holy war” a technical Islamic translation of the term. That terminology carries distinctly European and Christian crusading baggage. The moment loaded expressions such as “holy fighting” are inserted into an English translation, the reader should ask whether they are being given an accurate translation or an ideological interpretation. Thirdly, the phrase “with full force of numbers and weaponry” makes the presentation even more problematic. It is not a translation of the Arabic word jihād or Qitāl. Islamic history itself demolishes the suggestion that jihād is somehow defined by overwhelming numbers and weaponry; Muslims were frequently vastly outnumbered. It lays down timeless principles governing warfare, discipline, leadership, justice, treaties, unity, and the ethics of armed conflict. Its guidance completely dismantles the hypocrisy of Western imperialism and exposes the moral bankruptcy of Zionist aggression, both of which have repeatedly justified the killing of innocent civilians whilst preaching the language of "human rights". The Islamic military tradition was never one of conquest driven by greed, as the far right seeks to portray it. Allah says: "Do not revile those whom they invoke besides Allah, lest they should revile Allah in hostility and ignorance." (6:108) From this verse, the Ulamā derive a fundamental principle: if an act is permissible in itself—even recommended or rewarding—but carrying it out will lead to a greater evil, then it must be abandoned, provided it is not one of the essential objectives of the Sharīʿah. For this reason, although speaking against false deities is permissible and may even be praiseworthy when establishing the truth, Allāh prohibited it because it would provoke the idolaters to revile Him in ignorance. Thus, a permissible act was prohibited due to its harmful consequences. The same principle is found in the Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not abuse your parents." The Companions asked how anyone could abuse their own parents. He ﷺ replied that a man abuses another person's parents, who then retaliates by abusing his parents. By becoming the cause of that abuse, it is as though he abused his own parents. Likewise, the Prophet ﷺ wished to rebuild the Kaʿbah upon the original foundations of Ibrāhīm (a.s.), restoring the Ḥaṭīm and reopening the second door. Despite this being an act of virtue, he abandoned the idea because Quraysh had only recently embraced Islām and feared they would become confused or doubtful upon seeing the Kaʿbah demolished. A question naturally arises: if permissible acts are abandoned to prevent a greater harm, why were jihād, daʿwah, the recitation of the Qur'ān, the adhān and ṣalāh not abandoned, even though they provoke the disbelievers, who mock Islām and fight the Muslims because of these obligations? Abū Manṣūr (r.a.) answers that this objection overlooks a crucial condition. This principle applies only to matters that are not among the objectives of the Sharīʿah. Reviling idols is not an objective of Islām, nor was rebuilding the Kaʿbah upon its original foundations. Therefore, both could be abandoned in order to avert a greater harm. However, acts such as jihād, daʿwah, the recitation of the Qur'ān, the adhān and ṣalāh are themselves among the very objectives and manifest symbols of Islām. They are never abandoned simply because others react with hostility. Rather, they continue to be upheld while every lawful means is taken to minimise the resulting harm. This is precisely why al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī and Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn (r.a.) differed when they saw men and women gathered together at a janāzah. Ibn Sīrīn turned back, whereas al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said, "Why should we abandon an obligation because of the wrongdoing of others?" Ṣalāt al-Janāzah remained obligatory, while the unlawful mixing was to be corrected—not the obligation abandoned. From this, the jurists deduce countless rulings. For example, if a father knows that his son will only become more defiant if directly commanded, he should advise him gently rather than issue a command, thereby avoiding increasing his son's sin. Likewise, if there is strong reason to believe that advice will only drive someone further into disobedience, then refraining from advising may, in certain situations, be the wiser course. Imām Bukhārī (r.a.) even dedicated a chapter to this principle: "There are occasions when permissible—even commendable—acts are abandoned for fear that people may misunderstand them and fall into something worse." The principle, therefore, is clear: whatever is merely permissible or recommended may be abandoned if it predictably leads to a greater harm and no objective of the Sharīʿah is compromised. However, the obligations, symbols and objectives of Islām are never to be abandoned because others misunderstand them or react with hostility. Abeer Qassim Hamza al-Janabi was an Iraqi Muslim schoolgirl gang-raped and murdered alongside her family by white American Christian soldiers in her home in March 2006. And everyone needs to know her name. The details will shock you to the core. But it’s important to know her story, especially now because the same far right who justify the targeting of Muslims at home need reminding of what they did and celebrated abroad. In 2006, during the US led occupation of Iraq, US soldiers based at a checkpoint in the village of Yusufiyah began sexually harassing 14 year old Abeer on her trips to school. Several times the soldiers even entered her house and made gestures towards Abeer. But the father didn’t think it too serious as she was just a schoolgirl. However, on 12 March, Abeer was told to stay at home to stay home with her parents, along with her sister, while her two brothers went to school, to keep her safe from the lecherous soldiers. The family was poor. They all lived in a one-bedroom rental house. But it was home. Who could have known on that fateful day that Abeer would have been far safer on the war torn streets of Baghdad than her own home. They all would have. In broad daylight, 5 soldiers from 502 Infantry regiment forcibly entered the al-Janabi family home. The soldiers separated Abeer from her parents and her six-year-old sister (Hadeel). Ringleader, Steven Green, shot and killed the mother (Fakhriyah), father (Qasim), and younger sister after trying them up, while Abeer screamed for help, before participating in her gang-rape. Abeer heard the shots that killed her parents and sister as they raped her. Green subsequently shot Abeer in the head several times. The soldiers set her body and the house on fire to cover up the crimes. The two boys were the only survivors from the family, because they’d been at school. The US soldiers lied to cover up their crimes, claiming Sunni insurgents were responsible. But the truth came out soon enough. The culprits were eventually tried, convicted and given long sentences. However, this was not an isolated incident. Anti-Arab racism, Islamophobia, and systemic dehumanisation played a foundational role in these crimes and countless others. In May 2009, President Obama blocked the publication of *hundreds* of classified military photographs depicting the torture, rape, and sexual abuse of Iraqi Muslim detainees. He thought the truth would harm US troops and inflame anti-US coalition opinion. I wonder why?
