Rabīʿ al-Awwal is the month in which the leader of mankind, our beloved Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, was born, and the month in which he passed away. There is no human being more deserving of our love than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He endured immense hardship to convey this dīn, wept out of concern for his ummah, and left us with a path that leads to Allah and His eternal pleasure. The Power and Promise of Seeking Forgiveness فَقُلۡتُ اسۡتَغۡفِرُوۡا رَبَّكُمۡؕ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ غَفَّارًا. يُّرۡسِلِ السَّمَآءَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ مِّدۡرَارًا وَّيُمۡدِدۡكُمۡ بِاَمۡوَالٍ وَّبَنِيۡنَ وَيَجۡعَلۡ لَّـكُمۡ جَنّٰتٍ وَّيَجۡعَلۡ لَّـكُمۡ اَنۡهٰرًا “So I said, ‘Pray to your Lord for your forgiveness: Indeed He is Ever-Forgiving. He will cause the heavens to rain upon you in abundance, supply you with wealth and children, and give you gardens as well as rivers.” (71:10-12) This āyah highlights the importance of seeking forgiveness (istighfār). Nūḥ (ʿalayhis-salām) describes Allah as al-Ghaffār, the Ever-Forgiving: a promise that He responds to those who turn to Him in sincere repentance. Knowing that people naturally love immediate benefits, Nūḥ ﷺ used the path of encouragement, linking forgiveness to tangible blessings. He promised that those who seek Allah’s pardon would receive: 1. Abundant rain to nourish the earth. 2. Wealth and provisions , in all forms. 3. Children, a source of joy and continuity. 4. Gardens and orchards to enjoy. 5. Flowing rivers, sustaining their lands and lives. Imām al-Shawkānī (raḥimahullāh) explains: “This āyah shows that seeking forgiveness (istighfār) is among the greatest causes of rain and the attainment of sustenance.” Reflect: How often do you sincerely seek Allah’s forgiveness in a day?

Rain is a mercy and blessing from Allah, and its absence reminds us of just how weak and dependent we are upon Him. Drought is a test that afflicted the believers even during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. At times like these, let us turn sincerely to Allah, increase in istighfār and remain constant in duʿāʾ. Imāms should supplicate for rain during the Jumuʿah khuṭbah using some of the supplications mentioned above, which are found in the ḥadīth. We should also continue making these duʿās individually for as long as the dry conditions persist.

As we enter Rabīʿ al-Awwal, there remain just six months until the blessed month of Ramaḍān. Let us not wait until Ramaḍān to begin changing. Start preparing from now: fast when you can, strengthen your connection with the Qur’ān, increase in night prayer, repentance and duʿāʾ, and work on leaving the sins and distractions that distance you from Allah. اللَّهُمَّ بَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَانَ O Allah, allow us to reach Ramaḍān.

Keep your tongue moist with abundant ṣalawāt upon our beloved Prophet ﷺ, especially on the day and night of Jumuʿah. May Allah make us amongst those who send abundant ṣalawāt upon him ﷺ, live in accordance with his Sunnah, and grant us his intercession on the Day of Judgement. اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَّعَلَىٰ اٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ وَعَلَىٰ اٰلِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيْدٌ مَّجِيْدٌ. اَللّٰهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَّعَلَىٰ اٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ وَعَلَىٰ اٰلِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيْدٌ مَّجِيْدٌ

Let the solar eclipse make you reflect on the Day of Judgement: the terrifying Day when the sun and moon will lose their light and become dark. فَإِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُ. وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُ. وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ. يَقُوْلُ الْإِنْسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ. كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ. إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمُسْتَقَرُّ. “So, when the eyes will be dazzled, and the moon will lose its light, and the sun and the moon will be joined together, on that day man will say, ‘Where is the escape?’ Never! There will be no refuge at all. On that day, towards your Lord will be the destination (of everyone.)” (75:7-12) • These verses describe the shocking and awe-inspiring events of the Last Day, a scene so overwhelming that the human heart trembles in confusion and fear. The moon loses its light, the sun and moon merge in a terrifying spectacle, and the soul confronts the reality of its impending reckoning. • At that moment, all illusions vanish: no escape, no evasion, no trickery or delay can avert the encounter with the All-Just, the Supreme Judge. Every individual will face the consequences of their deeds, whether small or large, present or postponed. The sun and moon are amongst the great signs of Allah. He alone can take away their light in an instant. Let the eclipse remind us of the absolute power of Allah and the weakness of His creation, awaken fear and humility in our hearts, and move us to take heed and turn to Him in repentance.
