Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali reports that some of the salaf used to say: When I am afflicted with a calamity, I praise Allah four times: I praise Allah for it not being worse than it is, I praise Allah that He provided me with the ability to bear it patiently, I praise Him for granting me the accord to say, ‘Verily to Allah do we belong and to Him do we return’, and I praise Him for not making the tribulation in my religion. Shaykh Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله wrote: لو علم العبد كيف يدبر الله له الأمور، وكيف ينظر له من فوق عرشه، لذاب قلبه محبةً لله. If the servant knew how Allah ﷻ manages his affairs and cares for him from above His ﷻ Throne, his heart would melt in love for Allah.
