Yes it's true, the world's oldest sculptured figure is perhaps 41,000 years old. It was carved from a mammoth tusk and left in a cave in Germany so long ago that you can hardly imagine it. Find out all about this incredible ice age wonder here.

This informative chart by Guus Kroonen et al. illustrates how several agricultural terms underwent semantic shifts during different stages of early Indo-European development. Something that stands out is that these roots originally had broader meanings in Basal Indo-European (also known as Proto-Indo-Anatolian), such as “crush,” “scatter,” “field,” or “granule”. Field, for example, is a vague term that could have referred to either a place to plant or pasture land for herding animals. On the chart we can see the proposed development of more specialized agricultural meanings like “plow,” “sow,” “cultivated field,” or “cereal” in later stages. Some of these innovations only occur in the European branches. These findings imply that early Indo-European speakers possessed only a limited agricultural vocabulary. The current data provided suggested that agriculture was present in a limited capacity but was not the dominant component of their economy. Chart source: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article

Sketch of a mammoth from 1800 based on a carcass discovered frozen in Siberian permafrost. Pretty good tbh, few details not quite there and the result looks insane but give the guy a break, he did his best.

  • This is great news for me as I'm a huge firm fan.
